FAQs – frequently asked questions

Australia’s tech sector is thriving, growing faster than many other sectors and contributing over $167 billion to the economy. Competition for jobs is, therefore, extremely fierce. Most new tech professionals come from reskilling, so continuous learning and gaining new skills and knowledge is vital. Approximately half of Australia’s tech workforce is born overseas, making skilled migration an important pathway into the sector.  There are also 1.1 million ‘near tech’ workers, people with synergistic skills and experience able to switch careers. As the professional association for Australia’s tech sector, we are across the areas of growth and the pathways to in-demand jobs.

Australia needs an additional 312,000 professionals by 2030 or risks missing out on disruptive technologies such as AI, Cloud and data analytics. Consequently, skills for roles in the deployment of AI, machine learning and cybersecurity are in high demand.

Roles such as CIO (Chief Information Officer), CTO (Chief Technology Officer), and CSA (Cyber Security Architect) can command salaries well more than $350K. These roles require many years of experience and the ability to maintain skills relevant to technological advances.

Generative AI is changing society faster than any technology before it. Today, every business is a tech business, dependent upon digital transformation to maintain competitiveness, productivity, and growth. Tech professionals who master AI models and frameworks for machine learning and deep learning will be in high demand. So will professionals with an understanding of infrastructure, cloud platforms, and data monitoring. Those who can mitigate bias and navigate the ethics and fairness of AI models will also be sought after.

Technical skills that enable the deployment of AI and machine learning models, cybersecurity, data analytics, and software programming are all in high demand. However, human and interpersonal skills are what Australia’s tech employers prize the most. Communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking are essential for professionals aiming to lead large tech teams and digital transformation projects.
