Media Release - ACS welcomes new South Australian minister

Cabinet appointments reflect importance of state’s tech sector

25 March 2022

ACS, the professional association for Australia’s technology sector, has welcomed the appointment of Deputy Premier Susan Close as Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science.

Along with the key technology portfolio, Ms Close will also hold the positions of Minister for Defence and Space Industries, Minister for Climate, Environment and Water, positions which recognise the role of technology in these key areas of responsibility.

Chris Radbone, ACS South Australia Chair, said “we’re looking forward to working with Minister Close and the rest of the Malinauskas government to build South Australia’s position as one of the leading centres for the nation’s technology industries.”

“In the run up to the state election, we released our election platform which aimed to attract more talent to South Australia, build our technology education capabilities and make sure the benefits of the current tech boom are shared across regions.”

ACS’s South Australian election platform laid out five key areas to boost the state’s technology sector including attracting more tech professionals, improving technology education, building collaboration across the cybersecurity sector, and raising the importance of IT within government.

“Given the Deputy Premier’s experience as Minister for Education and Minister for Innovation in the previous Weatherill government, we have confidence that the portfolio is in the hands of someone well versed in the issues and opportunities ahead for South Australia.”

“With yesterday’s cabinet announcement, we feel Premier Malinauskas, Minister Close, and the rest of the government team appreciate the importance of the IT sector to South Australia’s future and ACS hopes to have a productive and collaborative partnership with the SA government over coming years,” concluded Mr Radbone.
