ACS statement on Microsoft and Australian government cloud and cyber announcement

ACS President, Dr Nick Tate, welcomes the investment while calling for more industry collaboration.

Media Statement

24 October 2023

Following today's announcement of Microsoft's investment of $5bn in Australian cloud, cybersecurity and AI capabilities, ACS President Dr Nick Tate, FACS, made the following comment.

"The Australian government’s announcement this morning is a recognition of the importance of cyber security, cloud technologies and AI, and their roles in national security. We welcome this arrangement and are pleased the Microsoft arrangement also includes support for 300,000 Australians to boost their skills in these areas.

ACS is however concerned that Australian businesses may have been left out of the procurement process for this agreement and would strongly urge the government, and all state jurisdictions, to consider local providers when considering such initiatives.

With AI being increasing critical to Australia’s economy, it is essential that all stakeholders and the nation’s future needs are considered, and we look forward to the government working with all the IT sector’s stakeholders in ensuring sovereign capacity in this area."
