AI in Society Committee

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Society Committee within the Australian Computer Society (ACS) serves as a leading voice in examining the profound and far-reaching impact of AI on individuals, organisations, and communities. Bringing together experts from academia, industry, government, and civil society, the committee is dedicated to fostering a balanced, informed, and responsible approach to the development and deployment of AI technologies across Australia.

Artificial Intelligence has rapidly evolved from a specialised research domain into a foundational technology shaping nearly every sector, including healthcare, education, finance, public services, and creative industries. While AI offers significant opportunities to enhance productivity, innovation, and decision-making, it also raises critical questions around ethics, bias, accountability, privacy, and the future of work.

The primary mission of the ACS AI in Society Committee is to promote awareness, understanding, and thoughtful engagement with AI. Through research, policy development, and collaborative initiatives, the committee seeks to explore both the opportunities and challenges of AI, supporting the creation of frameworks that ensure its safe, transparent, and equitable use.

By convening diverse stakeholders, the committee acts as a platform for dialogue and collaboration, enabling the exchange of ideas and the development of practical solutions to complex societal issues. From addressing algorithmic fairness and governance to exploring AI’s role in shaping digital inclusion and economic resilience, the committee works to ensure that AI technologies are aligned with community values and public interest.

The ACS AI in Society Committee is committed to advancing ethical, inclusive, and sustainable AI practices. Through advocacy, education, and leadership, it aims to guide the responsible integration of AI into society—ensuring that its benefits are widely shared while risks are carefully managed in support of a fair and trustworthy digital future.
