What can be done to improve it?

Professional migration is an evolving challenge for Australia. With growing skill gaps, the technology industry is continuously bemoaning a lack of capable professionals in critical areas such as cyber security, artificial intelligence and data analysis, to name a few. Australia will need 1.2 million skilled technologists by 2027, and we’re looking at a short fall of 330,000 workers if current enrolment and migration trends persist.

At the same time, concerns are being raised that Australian citizens should receive preference in competitive job markets before migrant candidates are considered, with discussions touching on a range of topics from immigration, to reskilling, and non-science pathways to STEM-preferred options.

So how do we strike a balance that ensures high-paying jobs for our existing IT professionals, while providing for migrant inclusion, diversity, and the support of the future technology needs of the country?

Join us for the next ACS Think Tank discussion where we'll be asking the question: Is Australia's approach to skilled migration working?
