Australian Computer Society (ACS) National Elections 2020/2021 – Call for Nominations

Nominations are called for the currently vacant positions of

(1) President (National Office Bearer) (Click to download)

(3) National Congressional Representatives (Four positions) (Click to download)

These positions will expire on the 31 December 2021. Nominations forms for each individual position are provided above, please complete the appropriate form.

 

All positions are part of Management Committee, which is the governing body of the Society. Members of Management Committee are ‘responsible persons’ under the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) Act and as such have an obligation to abide by appropriate governance standards. Accordingly, successful candidates prior to taking office will be required to sign a declaration relating to disqualifying offences. Successful candidates will be required to execute disclosures on any perceived or actual conflicts of interest and a confidentiality declaration. All positions are also members of the ACS Congress, which is an advisory and electoral body.

 

The role of Management Committee is to:

  • lead, direct and ensure the organisation operates effectively
  • develop/approve long-term strategic plans and monitors progress in implementing the strategic plan
  • monitor the activities of the organisation and ensure that activities support the organisation's overall purpose/aims
  • ensure compliance with all relevant legal and regulatory requirements
  • ensure adequate financial resources are sought/secured
  • ensure money and property is properly managed including the preparation of funding applications as agreed with Management Committee
  • ensure appropriate organisational policies and procedures are in place

 

Eligibility criteria for each position:

 

President (National Office Bearer):

  • must not be the current President or the Immediate Past President (ACS Rule 8.4.3(c)(i))
  • must be a member of the Professional Division (ACS Rule 8.4.3(c)(ii)). Fellows, Senior Members, Members and Honorary Members (who were members before classification as an Honorary Member) comprise Professional Division (ACS National Regulation 2.1.2)
  • must have been member of the Management Committee for at least 2 years (ACS Rule 8.4.3(c)(iii))
  • must be a current Congress member (other than a Coopted Congress Member) or have been a Congress member (other than a Coopted Congress Member) for at least 1 year within the 5 years immediately preceding the election or appointment. Unless exempted from compliance by Congress in its absolute discretion. (ACS Rule 8.4.3(b))
  • must not be a member of the Overseas Group (ACS National Regulation 2.13.1(c))

 

Vice President – Membership Boards (National Office Bearer):

  • must be endorsed by a majority of the members of the Profession Advisory Board, unless the member has been endorsed by Management Committee (ACS Rule 8.4.3(d)(i)). The ACS National Office will seek Board Endorsement from the relevant Board on your behalf, you will be notified of the outcome.  All correspondence relating to Board endorsements will remain confidential.
  • must not be the current or any past Vice President where there appointment would result in being elected or appointed for consecutive or overlapping terms, or a combination of both, totalling more than 6 years as Vice President (ACS Rule 8.4.3(d)(ii))
  • must be a member of the Professional Division (ACS National Regulations 2.13.2). Fellows, Senior Members, Members and Honorary Members (who were members before classification as an Honorary Member) comprise Professional Division (ACS National Regulation 2.1.2)
  • must be a current Congress member (other than a Coopted Congress Member) or have been a Congress member (other than a Coopted Congress Member) for at least 1 year within the 5 years immediately preceding the election or appointment. Unless exempted from compliance by Congress in its absolute discretion. (ACS Rule 8.4.3(b))
  • must not be a member of the Overseas Group (ACS National Regulation 2.13.1(c))

National Congressional Representative:

  • Congress must elect four (4) National Congressional Representatives. Each Branch with greater than 25% of members entitled to vote at general meetings of the Society, calculated at the end of the month preceding the election is entitled to a National Congressional Representative position. As at the 31 January 2020 New South Wales Branch and Victorian Branch would have one (1) position each, contingent on them continuing to exceed the 25% membership requirement as at the 29 February 2020. (ACS Rule 10.4.1.)
  • Congress must not elect or appoint any Congressional Representative as National Congressional Representative if such election or appointment would result in that National Congressional Representative being elected or appointed for consecutive or overlapping terms, or a combination of both, totalling more than 6 years as National Congressional Representative (ACS Rule 10.4.6)
  • must not be a member of the Overseas Group (ACS National Regulation 2.13.1(c))
  • must be a member of the Professional Division (ACS National Regulations 2.13.2). Fellows, Senior Members, Members and Honorary Members (who were members before classification as an Honorary Member) comprise Professional Division (ACS National Regulation 2.1.2)

The Branches have confirmed their Congressional Representatives as of 1 January 2020. 

How to nominate:

Complete the relevant nomination form, along with a passport-sized photo of yourself for use in the election and a statement of your goals and your qualifications (suitability) for the position and email it to Secretary@acs.org.au or post/ deliver to Secretary, ACS, Level 27, Tower 1, 100 Barangaroo Avenue, Sydney NSW 2000

 

Applicants for ACS elected member positions must have undertaken the ACS online induction program to be eligible to contest the position. Links to the induction program can be obtained from Secretary@acs.org.au and must be completed by 10 March 2020, prior to the National Elections at the Congress meeting.

Nominations will close at 5.00pm (AEDT) on Wednesday 26 February 2020. No late nominations will be accepted.

 

Election process:

The positions are elected by Congress and elections will be held on Wednesday 11 March 2020 in Sydney. The Candidate Statement and photo will be provided to Congress, as part of the electoral process. Applicants may be expected to make a short presentation to Congress, either in person or by teleconference, in support of their candidacy.
