ACS: Australia must build AI capability at home while staying connected globally

15 June 2026

ACS comments on why recent developments around access to advanced AI models highlight the importance of building Australia’s own AI capability, skills and confidence, while continuing to work with trusted global partners.

Dr Prins Ralston, ACS Interim CEO said:

“Australia will continue to benefit from global AI platforms and trusted international partnerships. But we should also be clear that our long-term goal must be to build stronger AI skills and capability here at home.

“The Anthropic story is a useful reminder that access to advanced AI systems can be shaped by decisions made offshore, including legitimate national security and safety considerations. Australia needs to be able to navigate that environment with confidence.

“That means investing in the foundations of AI capability: skills, compute, trusted data infrastructure, local companies, safety expertise, and public sector capability.

“AI sovereignty should not mean isolation. It should mean Australia has the capability, choice and influence to use AI in ways that support our economy, our institutions and our national interest.”

Beau Tydd, ACS President said:

“For Australia’s technology professionals, this reinforces how important AI capability will be across the workforce.

“As AI becomes embedded in business, government and critical services, we need professionals who can understand these systems, assess risk, manage dependencies and deploy AI responsibly.

“Building Australia’s AI capability is not only about infrastructure or investment. It is also about people. We need to invest, develop and support the technical workforce that can help Australia use AI safely, confidently and competitively.”

“Global platforms will remain important, and Australia should be building the professional capability to use AI on our own terms, in ways that support our economy, institutions and public trust.”
