Make no mistake, digital connectivity and internet speed can be an accelerator or barrier to growth. To participate fully in the digital revolution, cities are required to have the enabling infrastructure that not only allows them to engage, but allows them to break through, and get to the front of the line.
The City of Adelaide is getting ready to construct a transformational ten gigabit fibre-optic network that will deliver lightning fast data speeds to the city. In what will be an Australian-first, the network will ‘interconnect’ to cloud-based data centres across the globe, enabling synchronous data speeds that are virtually unachievable with traditional internet services.
Complementing the current NBN rollout and the State Government’s Gig City project, the network will enable city-based businesses, institutions, governments, researchers, creatives and entrepreneurs with the ability to connect directly to each other and, at the same time, export their services to the world. Once in place, the network will benefit nearly all industries including health and wellbeing, finance, defence, advanced manufacturing, information management, cyber security and the public sector, and will underpin future innovation in areas such as robotics, artificial intelligence, way-finding, 3D printing and augmented reality.
As the City of Adelaide’s Chief Information Officer, Peter Auhl, describes the Ten Gigabit City network, "A foundation for a modern economy, it allows us to create an app store of services for the city. Business will now have the tools for real time digital collaboration, it will strengthen value chains, foster innovation and unleash the Internet of Things."
The sharing of resources through the Ten Gigabit City network will generate significant value to the economy and create new business models. New businesses will rise, and existing ones will accelerate their success by having greater access to partners whose distance between them significantly shrinks.
Want to find out more? Please join us at the next of our Leaders Lunch Series where Peter Auhl will explain the 10 Gigabit City network and a panel of industry and government leaders will discuss the benefits to the South Australian economy.
