ACS Leadership: An Earth Day initiative - War on carbon [Virtual]
Winning the War on Carbon With the impacts of climate change becoming more apparent, and the modelling showing worse to come, communities around the world are looking for increasingly effective ways to lower their carbon emissions. Can technology come to the rescue once again? Or will we find energy dense data centres and power hungry compute infrastructure will only add to our emissions and troubles? Steven Craddock – a Cloud Developer Advocate and Java Veteran from Oracle joins Kirsty Linehan – Oracle’s Chief Public Sector Advisor for a discussion of the trials and triumphs of technology in the War on Carbon. Learn what the opportunities for change are at a global and local scale and how you can make a positive impact by yourself or within your organisation.
About this event
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world when people take time to appreciate humankind's connection to the Earth and to raise awareness of our environmental challenges.
What can you do for Earth Day?
This event aims to show how simple changes that will significantly impact society in the fight against global climate change that ACS members can make.
War on carbon – defending against the threat of climate change, IT impact on the environment, security and more...
Basic premises are picking the least energy consuming language for runtime (Java & GraalVM have great stats), switching services off or going serverless and autoscaling as demand changes.
The presentation will cover the discussion relates to the war on carbon as actions on infrastructure and cloud utilisation lower power consumption and cooling requirements reducing the need for toxic refrigerants, as well as the other elements of infrastructure and system management.
Our guest speakers:- Steven Craddock, Principal Cloud Specialist Engineer, Oracle Australia
