Kimberlee Weatherall

Professor Kimberlee Weatherall is a Professor of Law at the University of Sydney Law School. Her research spans intellectual property law, the relationship between law and emerging technologies, and international trade law. Her research program has a strong interdisciplinary focus, having included projects with economists, cognitive psychologists, and, currently, social scientists and data science. She has been a member of assorted government advisory committees including the Advisory Council on Intellectual Property, and is a past winner of Linux Australia’s Rusty Wrench award for contributions to the open source community for her work on law reforms consequent on the US-Australia Free Trade Agreement

Peter Leonard

Peter Leonard

Peter Leonard is a data and technology business lawyer and principal of Data Synergies. Peter is also a Professor of Practice in UNSW Business School. Peter was a founding partner of Gilbert + Tobin and continues to consult to G+T. He has worked as a legal and commercials adviser to global and Asia Pac data, communications and technology businesses for over thirty years. Peter chairs the Australian IoT (Internet of Things) Alliance's Data work stream, the Law Society of New South Wales Privacy and Data Committee and the Australian Computer Society's Artificial Intelligence and Ethics Technical Committee. He serves on a number of advisory boards, including the NSW Data Analytics Centre, and a number of boards of directors. He is a former global chair of the International Bar Association's Technology Committee, former global vice-chair of the International Bar Association's Technology Committee, and former director of iappANZ. He also services on a number of corporate and advisory boards, including the Advisory Board to the Australian Human Rights Commissions Technology and Rights Project.

Ian Oppermann

Ian Oppermann

Dr Ian Oppermann is the NSW Government’s Chief Data Scientist working within the Department of Customer Service and Industry Professor at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Ian has 27 years of experience in the ICT sector and has led organizations with more than 300 people, delivering products and outcomes that have impacted hundreds of millions of people globally. He has held senior management roles in Europe and Australia as Director for Radio Access Performance at Nokia, Global Head of Sales Partnering (network software) at Nokia Siemens Networks, and then Divisional Chief and Flagship Director at CSIRO. 
 
 Ian is considered a thought leader in the area of the Digital Economy and is a regular speaker on “Big Data”, broadband enabled services and the impact of technology on society. He has contributed to 6 books and co-authored more than 120 papers which have been cited more than 3500 times. Ian has an MBA from the University of London and a Doctor of Philosophy in Mobile Telecommunications from Sydney University. Ian is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers Australia, a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, a Fellow of the Royal Society of NSW, a Fellow and Immediate Past President of the Australian Computer Society, and a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Ian is also president of the Australia National Committee of the IEC and president of the JTC1 strategic advisory committee in Australia.

COVID-19 Event Attendance Compliance

By registering to attend an ACS in person event you are agreeing to the below terms and conditions

  • If an attendee is displaying flu or cold like symptoms in the days leading up to the event and therefore is not able to attend, ACS will refund the registration fee.
  • If an attendee comes to an event and is displaying flu or cold like symptoms they will be asked to leave
  • We ask all ACS members to respect the social distancing guidelines, if an attendee repeatedly disregards these guidelines, they may be asked to leave
  • ACS reserves the right to cancel the event within 24 hours' notice if either the speaker or the event host has advised us that they are exhibiting flu or cold like symptoms
  • All attendees must provide a valid phone number and email address to be contacted on if there is reason to notify about a possible COVID-19 exposure
