ACS Tech - Sustainable Data Centres in the Age of AI
This interactive event will examine how Australia, and Western Australia in particular, can capture the economic benefits of AI infrastructure while ensuring that data-centre growth is environmentally, economically and socially sustainable. Moreover, the event will consider innovation opportunities in the sustainable development of green data centres with the potential to support Western Australia’s transition to renewable energy.

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the economics and infrastructure requirements of the digital economy, driving rapid growth in demand for high-performance computing and data-centre capacity. This growth creates a significant sustainability challenge: data centres are energy-intensive, increasingly concentrated in areas with constrained electricity networks, and can place substantial demands on water, land and other infrastructure. At the same time, they represent a major opportunity for investment, employment, innovation and the acceleration of renewable-energy development. Australia attracted approximately $10 billion in data-centre investment during 2024, while national electricity demand from data centres is expected to increase materially as AI adoption accelerates.
This interactive event will examine how Australia—and Western Australia in particular—can capture the economic benefits of AI infrastructure while ensuring that data-centre growth is environmentally, economically and socially sustainable. Moreover, the event will consider innovation opportunities in the sustainable development of green data centres with the potential to support Western Australia’s transition to renewable energy.
Leading experts from industry, government, and academia will present the opportunities and issues. Following the presentations, participants will unpack hypothetical case study scenarios before reporting back to the group in a dynamic interactive session.
Post presentation light refreshments will be provided.
PLEASE NOTE:
To confirm attendance and CPD point allocation, on arrival at registration, please make sure to have your event confirmation e-mail with QR code ready to present where your attendance will be recorded. This can be provided via your phone or a printed copy.
The event venue is the ACS WA Branch Office at Suite 4, 342 Albany Highway, Victoria Park.

Speakers
Before entering the Upper House, Brad was the Mayor of the City of Fremantle. He was first elected mayor in 2009 and re-elected in 2013 and 2017.
Prior to this Brad was the Dean of the School of Sustainability at Murdoch University. His research and teaching expertise included climate change, international development policy, and sustainability planning.
Brad has also previously worked with Oxfam in Cambodia and with the Australian Government Aid Program, AusAID, in Canberra.
When not working he likes riding his bike, drinking coffee, and spending time with his 9 year old daughter.
Before joining Pawsey, Mark worked across leading research organisations including NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Curtin University, and CSIRO-affiliated programs. His background combines atmospheric science, remote sensing, software engineering, and research computing, giving him a rare ability to bridge scientific domains and technical infrastructure strategic thinking.
Mark is particularly focused on emerging domains such as AI-ready data ecosystems, federated national research infrastructure, and sovereign computing capability. He is known for building high-impact partnerships across government, academia, and industry, and for shaping long-term initiatives that position Australia at the forefront of data-driven discovery and advanced computing innovation.
