*This session is for the mentoring program (old and new) participants. However, anyone is welcome to attend if you are interested in the topic.

Mentoring Matters!
The purpose of the ACS Mentoring Program is to provide an opportunity for members to help members; to connect individuals with those seeking advice and guidance to develop their careers.

Effective communication is a critical interpersonal skill; on the other hand, self-awareness is the ability to focus on yourself and how your actions, thoughts, or emotions do or don't align with your internal standards.

The Marketplace of Perception: Imagine yourself in a vast marketplace, selling not physical goods but your reputation, skills, and even personality. Every interaction, word, and action is like a product on display, constantly being evaluated by potential "buyers"—employers, colleagues, friends, or even strangers online.

The Currency of Judgment: These "buyers" use various forms of "currency" to judge you.

Trust: Is your word reliable? Do you follow through on commitments?

Competence: Do you have the skills and knowledge to succeed in your field?

Likability: Are you pleasant to be around? Do you have good social skills?

Potential: Do you show promise for growth and development?

The Power of Perception: These judgments can have a significant impact on your life. They can influence whether you get a job, make new friends, or land a business deal.

Not a One-sided Transaction: However, it's not a completely passive experience.

Beyond the Marketplace: It's important to remember that your value isn't solely defined by external judgment.

Focus on Intrinsic Worth: Develop your passions, talents, and a sense of self-worth independent of external validation.

Building Genuine Connections: Seek relationships based on mutual respect and shared values, not just perceived "marketability."

The goal isn't to become a flawless product but to be a self-aware individual who can navigate the marketplace of perception while staying true to yourself.

Additionally, consider these points: The Marketplace is Diverse. There is no single "ideal product." Different "buyers" will value different qualities.

The Market Fluctuates: Standards and expectations can change over time. Stay adaptable and keep learning.

Not Everyone is a Buyer: Focus on attracting the right kind of opportunities and connections, not mass appeal.

By understanding the dynamics of being "on sale," you can take control of your brand and navigate the world with confidence, authenticity, and purpose.

Presenter: Channi Bhullar AACS, Strategic Technology Leader, Insite Pty Ltd, and Mentor at ACS Canberra

Event run sheet
5:30 PM – 5:50 PM (20 min): Arrival & registration.
