<img alt="quantun" src="https://acsau--c.ap1.content.force.com/servlet/servlet.ImageServer?id=0159000000F8RFg&amp;oid=00D90000000o5NE&amp;lastMod=1523933212000"></img><br><br>This year will be no exception as we are honored to have <b>Professor Jingbo Wang</b>, Head of the Department of Physics at The University of Western Australia present on the subject of Quantum Computing.<br><br><b>&quot; What is Quantum Computing? Will it become a reality in the next decade? What makes it so much different from existing computer systems? How will it affect our lives?&quot;  </b><br><br>Prof Jingbo Wang will briefly provide a tutorial overview of QC giving particular attention to the state of the art and her contributions to the subject.<br><br>This will include a short history of the subject and why it is such a huge advance over classical computing.  In particular, she will explain the concepts of: Qubits, Superposition, Entanglement, Decoherence, Stochastic and Unitary Matrices. Computations may be repeated in order to achieve an arbitrary probability of the correct result.  Examples will be drawn from areas such as cryptography using Shor’s algorithm.  New programming languages such as Microsoft’s Q# (Q-sharp) will be necessary.  <br><br>Finally there will be some discussion of the impact of QC on society (for example cryptocurrencies, privacy and security). This will all be given at a level suitable for computing professionals with a bachelors degree in ICT.<br><br><b>Background - Dennis Moore Oration</b><br><br>The Oration is named after <b>Dennis Moore</b>, the father-figure of computing in Western Australia.  Professor Moore was first chairman of the WA Computer Society, the Director of the very first computing centre in WA, an executive director of Government Computing, and then appointed foundation Head of School of Computing at Curtin University of Technology in 1987.<br><br>The winner of the prestigious <b>1962 Prize Student Award</b>, sponsored by Dennis Moore, will also be announced.<br><br><img alt="Dennis Moore" src="https://acsau--c.ap1.content.force.com/servlet/servlet.ImageServer?id=0159000000Fdk6O&amp;oid=00D90000000o5NE&amp;lastMod=1523502183000"></img> <p><i><b>Dennis Moore with 2017 1962 Prize Winner, Mark Shelton.</b></i><br><br>This prestigious prize is annually awarded to an individual <b>Computing/Information Systems</b> student in Western Australia. Prof Jingbo Wang

Prof Jingbo Wang

Jingbo Wang is a professor in the School of Physics at The University of Western Australia. Her research spans several distinct disciplines including quantum dynamics theory, quantum computation and information, atomic and molecular physics, quantum chemistry, nanotechnology, acoustics and computational physics. Professor Wang received her PhD in 1989 from the Department of Physics and Mathematical Physics, Adelaide University. She has published extensively, including a recent book by Springer, one edited special journal issue by American Scientific Publishers, four book chapters by Academic Press, Nova Science Publishers and American Scientific Publishers, as well as numerous research papers in prestigious physics journals and international conference proceedings.

Professor Wang currently leads the quantum dynamics and computation group at The University of Western Australia. She and her research team were among the first to show the power of quantum walks in distinguishing a wide range of non-isomorphic graph classes and in extracting local and global structural information of complex networks. Her recent work has provided some of the most efficient quantum circuits to implement a large variety of quantum walks. She has also developed various advanced numerical techniques to solve problems of practical importance in both quantum and classical regimes.

  • ACS reserves the right to cancel the event within 24 hours' notice if either the speaker or the event host has advised us that they are exhibiting flu or cold like symptoms
  • All attendees must provide a valid phone number and email address to be contacted on if there is reason to notify about a possible COVID-19 exposure
