IT security people seem to be constantly busy fighting fires or speaking jargon or even arguing amongst themselves! This can make it difficult for boards and non-IT executives to evaluate, direct or monitor the cyber risk area in their business.

This presentation will describe several corporate governance level questions that boards or the non-IT executive can ask to determine if their organisation is managing their security risk appropriately. We will also discuss how to evaluate the responses provided.

You should not be hearing about vulnerabilities such as ‘extreme risk web direct object references’ nor technical silver bullets. If someone says you have triple layers of firewalls – be worried, you’ve probably got unmanaged risks.

We’ll have plenty of time for a Q&A session. So please come along and offer any questions. It's a secure, open forum where you can share or ask anything of concern. We are here to help you.

Agenda
0700-0730 - Registration
0730-0830 - Presentation, breakfast along with Q & A
0830-0900 - Networking

Please note this event is NOT SUITABLE for students.

SKILL

Speaker

Gary Gaskell

Gary Gaskell

Gary Gaskell has always strived to make a difference in the IT security field. Way back in 1993 he thought this could be achieved via R&D for a Commonwealth supported research centre. A stint in banking saw him converted to “risk management” of the cyber threats.

In the last decade he has focused on skills to communicate these risks and techniques for governance of cyber security. Gary is the first in Queensland to attain the ACS’s Certified Professional status for Cyber Security. He is also a graduate member of the Institute of Company Directors, a CISSP, CISM, CISA and CCSP with a Research Master’s degree on network security.

He was awarded the Information Security Professional of the year award by the Australian Information Security Association in 2013. He regularly volunteers to provide training at security conferences and helps to organise the Crikey Con security conference in Brisbane.
