Jay Manley

Growing up in Western Sydney, Jay was a bit of a gamer and from age 10 would spend his spare time cobbling together spare parts to make a new computer to run the latest game for him and his friends. Over the years a passion for technology and science fiction developed, turning Jay into the classic nerd with a penchant for thinking of the future.

This futurist streak was grounded by volunteering as a surf life saver and fire fighter from the age of 16 into his early 20's, often having to drive an hour to Cronulla beach every summer weekend to attend beach patrol. At 17 he also demonstrated a desire for entrepreneurship by starting a small IT firm with his brothers doing tech support and building websites for small businesses in the area.

Jay went on to get a degree in Robotics & Mechatronics engineering at the Western Sydney University while founding that university's first solar car team to compete in the prestigious World Solar Challenge. Jay and his 3 teammates started with a small $500 budget and over 18 months created a $240K car and 35 person team that competed in the 2013 WSC.

In 2015 Jay followed a friend over to Silicon Valley and landed a job as an engineering program manager within design engineering at Tesla. Here he manages product design programs from the architectural concept phase through to mass production and beyond. He was program manager for the Powerpack which is what constitutes what is also known as the World's Largest Battery in Hornsdale, South Australia and is now currently program manager for a portfolio of battery programs such as the Powerwall 2.

Jay currently resides in San Francisco and is working full time at Tesla. He has broad understanding of various technology platforms and first-hand experience in their development as part of working with some of the world's most advanced design engineering teams at Tesla.
