<b>“Accessibility IS innovation” </b><br><br>People often think that using the time to make something accessible, it stops them from being able to respond quickly and be innovative and hence competitive. Being innovative in order to solve an accessibility need, often produces incredible advancements for us all to enjoy – it prods us to be innovative!<br><br>Eye tracking technology came about because of the need for people to control a computer if they couldn’t use a mouse or keyboard.  We now use this software to study how people interact with websites – where they look first, how long they linger on a feature etc. to improve our ability to sell products or services. It might not have eventuated if it hadn’t been needed for accessibility.  <br><br>When you create a technology that is often urgently needed for a person with a disability, it gives all users a unique method to interact with the device or software. You give people options, and those options lead to innovation.  We will examine how designing for accessibility often leads to innovating new products and methods.

Vivienne Conway

Dr Vivienne Conway is the Director of Web Key IT Pty Ltd which she founded in 2011. Web Key IT has a vision to enable website access for persons with disabilities. Web Key IT assists organisations with web-based programs and information to meet the needs of people with disabilities as well as to understand their legal requirements for website accessibility and develop the tools needed to meet the internationally-recognised website standards. As well as being involved in research and conference presentations, Vivienne leads her team of accessibility professionals to provide consulting, audit and accreditation and training in all aspects of digital accessibility. She is an ardent advocate for the effective recognition of the needs of people with disabilities and their inclusion in our digital society. Vivienne was recently announced as this years winner of the WAITTA Achiever of the Year award and is a finalist in the ACS Digital Disrupters ICT Professional of the Year .Vivienne completed her PhD in IT (website accessibility) at Edith Cowan University. She is a Certified Professional (Snr) member, and member of the WA Branch Executive Committee of the Australian Computer Society. She is active in W3C and the working groups, where Web Key IT is a member. This year she was the co-General Chair of the Web For All Conference (W4A 2017) held in Perth.

  • ACS reserves the right to change the program at any time. Every effort will be made to ensure a program of equivalent standard and members are updated with changes.
  • All dietary requirements are considered, however we cannot guarantee a 100% allergen free environment.
  • ACS reserves the right to prohibit entry or eject any person from an ACS event based on behaviour deemed inappropriate by ACS staff, its agents and/or others working under its authority.
  • Filming or streaming by attendees is not permitted. If an attendee is found to be doing so they will be asked to leave the event immediately and further action may be taken.
  • Photography and/or filming may take place during this event, by accepting these terms you consent to this. Please let a member of ACS know if you do not want your picture taken.

COVID-19 Event Attendance Compliance

By registering to attend an ACS in person event you are agreeing to the below terms and conditions

  • If an attendee is displaying flu or cold like symptoms in the days leading up to the event and therefore is not able to attend, ACS will refund the registration fee.
  • If an attendee comes to an event and is displaying flu or cold like symptoms they will be asked to leave
  • We ask all ACS members to respect the social distancing guidelines, if an attendee repeatedly disregards these guidelines, they may be asked to leave
  • ACS reserves the right to cancel the event within 24 hours' notice if either the speaker or the event host has advised us that they are exhibiting flu or cold like symptoms
  • All attendees must provide a valid phone number and email address to be contacted on if there is reason to notify about a possible COVID-19 exposure

Personal information collection notice

By registering for this event, you are providing personal information to the Australian Computer Society. In accordance with the ACS Privacy Policy, ACS collects personal information through registrations and attendances at its events for the purposes of:

When you register to participate in an overseas event, we may send personal information we collect overseas.
