William John Caelli

Em Prof William J (Bill) Caelli, AO, FACS is the first non-United States citizen to receive the Founders’ Medal by the Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education (CISSE). This recognition is the ICT industry's Oscars equivalent.

No one can deny that Bill is an "Expert' in Cybersecurity. He is often called upon from senior politicians/industry leaders for advice regarding policy and managing crisis situations.

Over 54 years in ICT with 44 years in all aspects of cybersecurity, commercial cryptography and public policy concerns. Worked for Hewlett-Packard and Control Data Corporation. PhD in nuclear physics /high-speed data acquisition. Fellow ACS, Life Sen Mem IEEE, Fellow ISC2, Hon CISM (ISACA), Member/Former Chair IFIP TC-11.

Specialities include: cybersecurity technology, policy and history; deep ICT industry knowledge, cyberwarfare/conflict/defence, cybersecurity education, SCADA security, trusted systems incl, SELinux.
An ACS Fellow and hugely respected ICT industry legend, Bill has also accomplished the following throughout his long, hugely successful career:

  • Cybersecurity consultancy IISEC Pty Ltd (1989)
  • Em Prof Queensland University of Technology (QUT)

  • Chair Safety and Stability Advisory Committee of auDa.
  • Former board member Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education (CISSE), USA 2004 to 2013.
  • ERACOM manufactured a range of computers based with added cryptographic hardware/software and security modules for IBM mainframes and data networks plus a first hardware-based encryption system for the IBM PC (1984) with full hard disk encryption/trusted key management.
  • Founding Director - Information Security Research Centre (ISRC) QUT, 1988, then Head of the School of Data Comms and Software Eng.
  • Made an Officer in the Order of Australia in 2003.
