Speaker Biographies

Ian Dennis "IT Jobs Market and Future Trends in Technology"
Ian Dennis is the Managing Director of Whitehorse Strategic Group Ltd. He brings to any task the experience of extensive senior management in the information and professional services industries, and a track record of many successful consulting assignments. He specialises in strategic consulting, market and innovation development, scientific commercialisation, outsourcing and Government commercialisation.

Ian was previously Director, Strategic Market Development for Ernst & Young, Managing Director of two successful computer software and services companies, and a Director of a number of others. He has been awarded an Australian Design Award for software in 1987 and was made a Life Member of the Software and Services Industry Federation in 1989 for his services to the industry. He served continuously on Federal or State boards of IT trade bodies from 1981 to 1996 and was one of the Australian founders of ASOCIO (Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organisation). In 1993 he was awarded the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia - Microsoft Excel Award. In 1997 he was elected a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society for significant contributions to the Australian information technology industry. Ian is a UN approved International Trade consultant (UNCTAD/GATT), and is security cleared by the Department of Prime Minister & Cabinet and the Defence Department.

He is a Foundation Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and Fellow of the ACS.

 
Professor Sohail Inayatullah "Challenging the Future - X & Y Generation"
Professor Sohail Inayatullah, a political scientist, is at Tamkang University, Taipei (Graduate Institute of Futures Studies), Visiting Academic/Research Associate at Queensland University of Technology (Centre for Social Change Research); Adjunct Professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast (Faculty of Social Sciences and the Arts); Associate, PROUT College, and Transcend Peace University. Dr. Inayatullah is a Fellow of the World Futures Studies Federation and the World Academy of Art and Science. He is on the International Advisory Council of the World Future Society, and on the Professional Board of the Futures Foundation, Sydney.
In 1999, Dr. Inayatullah held the UNESCO Chair at the Centre for European Studies, University of Trier, Trier, Germany and the Tamkang Chair in Futures Studies at Tamkang University, Taipei, Taiwan. From 1981 to 1991, he was senior policy analyst and planner with the Hawaii Judiciary, where he coordinated the Court’s Foresight Program.
 
Cameron Clarke "The Art of Networking"
Cameron is a sales professional with over 20 years in the IT and financial services industry. Key abilities and skills are Sales, Marketing, Networking, Consulting, Business Strategy and Public Speaking (Toastmasters). His networking skills cover politics and the business world.
 
Dr Anthony Overmars "Security"

Dr Anthony Overmars, founder of Softronics, was named winner of the 2006 Victorian Pearcey Award. He has a background in engineering, robotics and control systems.

Softronics initially developed and manufactured emulators which enabled their customers to develop and debug processing systems for a wide range of ICT products.

Today Softronics products are used by almost all major chip and product developers worldwide, including Nokia/Siemens, Texas Instruments and Motorola. 90% of Softronics business is export, with twenty distributors worldwide.

He also plays an active role in research and post-graduate programs at Swinburne University and at The University of Melbourne.

 
Ed Dawson "Emerging Technologies"

Ed Dawson is currently the editor of PC Authority magazine, a national print title on consumer computing. PC Authority is widely known for industry-leading scientific lab-testing of computers and the latest popular consumer hardware. Ed Dawson has been writing and reporting on IT in Australia for over eleven years, for a range of computing-related publications.

PC Authority magazine is a national title on consumer computing that reaches a vast audience of IT professionals and enthusiasts around Australia and the Asia Pacific region.

Tom Worthington - " Making money from Web Publishing with XML Technology"
Tom Worthington is an independent consultant, providing advice on information technology strategies, the design of web sites and use of e-commerce systems. He is Chair of the ACS Scholarly.

Publishing Committee and Director of Professional Development. Tom is a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University , where he teaches the design of web sites and use of e-commerce systems. He was the first web master of the Australian Department of Defence and in 1999 was elected a Fellow of the ACS for his contribution to the development of public Internet policy.
 
Philip Argy - "Professionalism and the ACS"

Philip Argy is the ACS President for 2006 - 2007. During his term as President, his plan is to focus on promoting professional standards as the most effective risk management strategy in the IT industry and bolster the public perception of the technology industry.

Professionalism is an important risk mitigation strategy and is critical to ensuring that Australia’s ICT sector is held in the highest regard by business, government and industry. He is committed to raising professional standards as he believes this is an essential step both for the future of the ICT sector and for the wider community.

Philip is a senior partner and has been with Mallesons Stephen Jaques for over 20 years. An experienced programmer who specialises in intellectual property, science and technology law, he has been interested in technology for over 35 years. His main areas of practice include patent litigation, commercial negotiations and dispute resolution strategies as well as outsourcing, electronic commerce and digital signatures. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Information Systems and a Bachelor of Laws.

Among previous positions held, Philip has served the ACS as New South Wales Branch Chair, and has served multiple terms as Vice-President. He has also appeared as an expert witness before Senate Committee hearings into On-line Content Regulation, Cybercrime and Spam. In 1996, Information Age nominated him as one of Australia’s 50 most influential people in Information Technology (IT), and he was awarded a ComputerWorld Fellow in 1997 for services to the IT industry. In addition, Euromoney magazine’s ``Best of the Best’’ special report has repeatedly listed Philip as one of the twenty best information technology lawyers in the world.


Valda Berzins - "Cultivating Connections"
Valda Berzins is currently the Chief Information Officer for Victoria Police responsible for all Information Technology.

Prior to this, she was Chief Information Officer at Australia Post and has held senior finance and IT roles, Company Secretarial positions and corporate strategy roles at Foster’s Brewing Group. Most of her career has been spent with Foster’s Brewing Group.

In 2006 she was recognized as one of the top 20 Asia Pacific CIOs by the CIO Executive Council, she was the IT&T’s CIO of the Year and was awarded Computerworld Fellow for 2001. She was also written up as one of the top 30 IT leaders in Australia in Robert Williams’ book “Success in IT”

Valda holds a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Commerce from Melbourne University. She is a certified practicing accountant (CPA) and a member of the Australian Computer Society (MACS).

Valda’s business related interests include speaking at conferences - local and international. She has held IT advisory board roles at both Monash and Melbourne University.

Her hobbies include landscape painting, building, gardening, interior design, and various sporting activities.

 
Jeff Alexander - "How to get that job! Effective Resume and covering letter development"

Jeff Alexander started at Microsoft in August 1987 as a Support Professional focusing on management tools for Microsoft's Enterprise customers. Since then he has moved through several external facing roles before taking on one of the Worlds largest Server consolidations -Microsoft's Asia Pacific infrastructure. 

Jeff Alexander  now focuses his passion for Infrastructure and management technologies as an Evangelist promoting and enabling the community of  IT Professionals through vehicles as Technet events; blogging, the TechNet Web Site (Technet lounge), User Groups, MVP's, and online webcasts.

 
Bernadette Lamaro - "What IBM look for in Graduates?"
Speaker: Bernadette Lamaro is the IBM Vitality Hiring Lead for Australia and New Zealand which includes the Internship and Graduate Programme. Bernadette joined IBM in 2002 as part of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting acquisition. During this period Bernadette assumed a role as a HR Transition Manger ensuring the PwCC employees integrated effectively into the IBM organisation. More recently Bernadette has been completing her Post Graduate Studies in Business majoring in Human Resource Management at Swinburne University of Technology.

This short presentation will introduce you to the crucial purpose of a covering letter, what to include in your covering letter and how to write a targeted resume, as well as key resume writing concepts and the different types of resumes you can use depending on your direction and focus and target audience.


John Dowling - "Take Your Career Global"
Grew up and studied in London, went on to become an Accountant. Moved to Australia working in Accounting and financial roles. John has worked in Australia and the US for companies such as Burns Philp, Aristocrat, KPMG and Rail Corp.
 
Martin Retscho - "Where to from here?"
Martin Retschko is the IT&T Sector Director for Hudson in Australia. In this role, Martin leads Hudson’s strategic sales & account management across clients in the IT&T industry.

Martin joined Hudson in 2000 and has held a variety of roles spanning IT Recruitment Specialist, Principal IT Recruitment Consultant, IT&T Service Delivery Manager and IT&T Practice Leader in Melbourne.

Prior to joining Hudson, Martin worked as a Senior Consultant in Executive Recruitment Practices in Melbourne. Before his 11 year’s in the Recruitment Industry, Martin worked as a Project Manager in the Property Sector.
 
Richard Gwilyn - "Adding Organisational Value Through IT                 Effectiveness"
Richard Gwilym (Senior Manager, Business Transformation) Richard has over 8 years experience consulting to clients across the UK, Europe and Australia on Technology related issues. Richard specialises in areas of IT Performance Assessment and IT Governance. Richard is one the leaders of our IT Effectiveness capability in Melbourne. His experiences have included reviewing, designing and implementing improvements to the effectiveness of IT functions across a wide range of IT Performance Assessment, IT Cost Management / Reduction, IT Governance and IT Transformation Initiatives.
 
Kristy Simpkin - ""Adding Organisational Value Through IT                   Effectiveness"
Kristy Simpkin (Manager, CAPM, Business Transformation) Kristy has over six years experience specialising in project management and support services within systems implementation and business change projects. She has recently been involved in one of the largest SAP Assets implementations in the world as the Data Workstream leader. She has also spent time project managing the implementation of several billing initiatives for a large Telecommunications company, covering areas from IT and business operations, through to marketing and front of house.
 
Dr Richard Helmer- "The Air Guitar T-Shirt"
Dr Helmers engineering career begun in commodity manufacture from where he moved into smart packaging and since 2003 has investigated intelligent textiles. He is a chemical engineer, and designs new practical devices drawing from many disciplines to create technologies for diverse sectors: energy, sports, entertainment, health, transport, logistics, and water.
