3. EdXN 4th Quarter - The World Internet
Project - Wednesday 29th OctoberTopic: What do Australians do
online? The internet is everywhere, at work, at
home, and on the move. If Kevin Rudd's plans come to anything, it will soon be
in every school. The underlying technologies are scarcely three decades old, and
some of the most popular sites, such as You Tube and Facebook, are only a few
years old, but this new world of information and communcation is now, for many
of us, an utterly everyday experience. Speaker: Scott Ewing

4. IT Project Management Special Interest Group - Monday 3rd November Topic: 'Things they don't teach
you at PM school' Often we focus on the technical skills required to achieve the goal of
becoming a project manager in our chosen area. When the time comes to
undertake training – we focus on the “hard” PM skills as established
within the PMBOK and other texts. This concentrates our attention on
Planning, Monitoring and Controlling the project and associated
principals covering Risk and Quality Management. Back in the real world
we quickly find that there are a whole heap of skills and tools which
we need but are not familiar with – the ones not covered at the PM
school. Speaker:

ACS applauds Gershon Report's recommendations on ICT efficiency - but
cautions against knee-jerk response to ICT spending, job cuts
The Australian Computer Society (ACS) today
welcomed the Federal Government’s release of Sir Peter Gershon’s report and
final recommendations on the Australian use of Information Communication
Technology (ICT) within the public sector. ACS Chairman, Kumar Parakala said he
applauds the Report’s emphasis on improving efficiency through a centralised and
strategic whole of government approach on ICT policies and the need for ICT to
support wider policy agendas.
“We are encouraged by the recommendations
which align with many of our own views and recommendations to the Review,” said
Mr Parakala. “The ACS concurs with Sir Peter Gershon’s thinking around the
potential to minimising ICT spending by focusing on efficiency rather than
needless sacrifice of ICT jobs. ICT performance is key to our overall economic
strength and productivity in Australia and we are concerned that knee jerk
cost-cutting based on the current financial climate will result in medium to
long term pain for the overall economy. This issue is as pivotal in the private
sector as it is within the public sector.”
The ACS submission to the
Review included key areas where ICT in Government required improved
efficiency, with particular emphasis on reducing ICT contractors and increasing
in-house ICT professionals, a whole of government skills development, retention
and training system for improved ICT professionalism in the public sector, the
need for greater Government investment in piloting testing ICT SME’s innovation
and ICT governance and risk mitigation.
