4. EdXN 4th Quarter - The World Internet
Project - Wednesday 29th October Topic: What do Australians do
online? The internet is everywhere, at work, at
home, and on the move. If Kevin Rudd's plans come to anything, it will soon be
in every school. The underlying technologies are scarcely three decades old, and
some of the most popular sites, such as You Tube and Facebook, are only a few
years old, but this new world of information and communcation is now, for many
of us, an utterly everyday experience. Speaker: Scott Ewing

7. Topics of the Week 1. ACS
congratulates Government’s forward momentum on Digital Economy - renews call to
fast-track outcomes with whole of Government approach
The
Australian Computer Society (ACS) has welcomed the outcomes of this week’s
Digital Economy Forum, led by Minister for Broadband Communications and the
Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy - but counselled that a tactical, whole
of government approach is critical to achieving these outcomes. ACS President Kumar
Parakala, said: “The ACS is pleased to see some Federal focus
on advancing Australia’s digital economy. We now
look forward to the timely completion of a Future Directions Paper which identifies
solutions some of the key building blocks of this economy including: ICT
infrastructure, skills, and ICT literacy. “There is a growing recognition of the
new world economy, and we are pleased this has been acknowledged by Senator
Conroy. This debate has been sidelined in the past by traditional economic
issues – and it is a step forward to see broad recognition that strengthening
our capabilities in the digital economy has impact well outside the information
and communications technology sector. We are encouraged that the Government
shares the view that Australia must also be a strong
producer of content and solutions to have a sustainable and leading Digital
Economy – and not simply continue as a strong user of ICT. Details at http://www.acs.org.au/index.cfm?action=notice&temID=noticedetails¬ID=896

2. ACS welcomes
Venturous vision for Australian Innovation System - but once again ICT
overlooked as an economic driver
The Australian Computer Society
(ACS) today welcomed the Federal Government’s release of Dr Terry Cutler’s
report and recommendations on the National Innovation System Review but said it
is disappointed that once again ICT has been overlooked as both an area of focus
and a driver of innovation. The ACS submission to the Review included key
recommendations and areas of development to enhance Australia’s long term
economic prosperity and growth; in particular ICT as a distinct priority area
for innovation, the improvement, flexibility and eligibility of R&D tax
concessions, the government’s role in procurement for IT start-ups and SME’s and
not just R&D concession for big corporate, and the reward of venture
capitalist in financing R&D for innovation. ACS
President Kumar
Parakala said, “The action taken by Federal Government and the
work of Dr. Terry Cutler should be applauded for recognising the need for a
review and overhaul of Australia’s innovation system.
