6. ACS Calls for Climate Sustainability Management via “Take Back” Policy and Energy Star Rating across technology products
Thursday, 5 June 2008 - The
ACS (Australian Computer Society), the peak professional body for the
IT sector, today called on the Federal Government to adopt two critical
regulatory approaches to improve climate sustainability of ICT, by
introducing a “Take Back” Policy for domestic and commercial ICT
manufacturers, and broadening the Energy Star Rating Standards for
domestic household appliances to encompass a broad suite of lifestyle
and office technology products.
ACS President, Kumar
Parakala said: “We are recommending prevention and cure approach -
encompassing a Take Back Policy to help reduce the volume of e-waste,
and broadening of the Government’s proposed Energy Rating System Policy
to drive more energy efficient technology products and assist in long
term reduction of emissions.” Mr Parakala acknowledged the Federal
Government’s recent confirmation of the energy star rating system for
appliances and some computer products, which was also a feature of the
ACS Green Policy released in 2007, and said the ACS looks forward to
further definition of the list of products required to conform to the
new standards.
