Topic: CERT - The Fight Against Insider Threat The Software Engineering Institute’s CERT® program, considered one of the top cyber research facilities in the world, has performed in-depth analysis of technology related insider crime cases for over 10 years. Consequences of insider attacks are costly and may inflict severe damage to an organization’s critical systems, reputation, and trusted partnerships. Business disruption and loss of confidential or proprietary information are some of the other severe impacts of insider cyber-security events which may be difficult to quantify or recoup. We have collected detailed technical, behavioral, and organizational information on over 600 cases and have developed assessments, new controls, and other methods for organizations to use in the fight against insider threat. This talk will focus on an overview of the CERT Insider Threat work, what we have learned, and how you can apply our lessons learned to your organization. Speaker:

EdXN - Social Media and Privacy Speaker: Sarah Mitchell Topic: Social media is firmly entrenched in our society, both in our professional and personal lives. The way we communicate with each other has changed because of these tools. Understanding what content to share and how the information flows through your network is a critical step in addressing privacy concerns. Old privacy concerns are no longer valid and you may be unintentionally exposing yourself, your family and friends. This presentation is designed to provide information and frank discussion about the privacy issues surrounding social media. In addition, recommendations for corporate social media policies and the role of IT in social media will be addressed.

Continuing professional development (CPD) improves your ability to perform your job by extending your knowledge and skills. CPD activities are additional to the normal requirements of your employment and aim to ensure that you are up to date, providing you with a competitive advantage in your profession. CPD can include:
To maintain your ACS certification status you need to complete CPD activities totalling 20 hours for Certified Technologist (CT) and 30 hours for Certified Professional (CP) each year. . Branch Fellows Committee News – Mentoring Scheme The Fellows Committee is investigating the feasibility of establishing a facility which will give Members the opportunity to assist other Members in developing high order specialist skills within the ICT profession. In this context the Fellows Committee is seeking indications of interest from Fellows and Senior Members of the Society to become Mentors to Members of the Society who are pursuing personal development in a speciality within the profession. Mentors are expected to have CP status , and a demonstrable depth of expertise in an IT speciality. Each mentor would be assigned one mentee, (or more than one if you are keen!), and expected to spend 4-6 hours per month per mentee. This time could be spent working with the mentee on writing and researching topics within their speciality, helping to identify areas that need further development in their chosen speciality, connecting them to other knowledgeable members of the Society, assisting them in preparing to sit exams, and other coaching activities. Mentors will be involved in the process of matching them with mentees. Our first task is to form a Mentor Faculty in order to know what areas of speciality we can offer support to mentees. Therefore, the Committee is inviting Fellows and Senior Members to submit their names for the role of Mentor, identifying the area of speciality that they can make available to mentees, and a supporting statement of no more than 300 words supporting their expertise in the chosen speciality area. The Committee believes that this is an exciting opportunity, which will provide benefits to both Mentor and mentee, and encourages suitable Fellows and Senior Members to offer their services. Nominations should be sent to the Chair, Allan Baird via email on or before Friday 24th February 2012, via email: allan.baird2@health.sa.gov.au Expressions of Interest for ACS Specialism Advisory Groups
The ACS is seeking expressions of interest from individuals to join our new Specialism Advisory Groups. Currently the specialist areas are Enterprise Architecture and Internet Security. Specialism Advisory Groups provide advice to the ACS on matters concerning competency/skill requirements necessary for certification, body of knowledge, educational and ongoing professional development requirements for a specialism that has been certified under the ACS Certification Scheme. The groups also advise on and form the basis of how the ACS will engage with the members of the specialism. The method for determining appointees is to be by election, and nominations for the positions are now being sought. Only individuals with experience, or qualified in these areas are eligible to nominate. Nominations close midnight EDT Friday 17 February 2012. The level of commitment for these roles will involve an initial meeting that may require travel. For any costs incurred, it is preferred these are absorbed by the individual, or organisation they currently represent. You must be prepared to commit to any meetings required for the duration of the role. Ensure you read the Terms of Reference for the Specialism Advisory Group for further details. Should you wish to apply for a position in one of the groups, please submit an application to emma.horgan@acs.org.au with the following information:
