Interview with the Australian Computer Society's Edward Mandla and Access Economics's Chris Richardson on the IT industry's new Work/Life Policy. Mr Mandla says the policy involves the choice of up to 12 months paid paternal or maternal leave, with the funds coming from a worker's own superannuation. Mr Richardson says Access has costed these proposals and found that they would cost less than $150 million a year.

Unemployment is at 5.1 per cent, there is a skills shortage so the question is where will business find new labour. Australian Computer Society President Edward Mandla says the company is recommending flexible work hours, parental leave and having company meetings in core hours between 10:00 am and 15:00 pm. Varina Nissen, Managing Director of Manpower Australia, says we should recognise that within 10-15 years Australia will be in a global competition for skilled labour so we need to make labour conditions more conducive.

The Australian information and communications technology (ICT) sector is a dynamic industry spanning a diverse array of businesses in areas from computer hardware and software, networking and communications to the Internet, telecommunications, multimedia and more.

As technology becomes ever more entrenched in our modern lifestyle, enabling every aspect of commerce, government, education, communications and entertainment, the ICT sector is playing an increasing role in driving economic growth and prosperity, accounting for 4.6% of GDP and 13.8% of total investment in Australia.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), ICT makes a greater contribution to the economy than agriculture, forestry and fishing, defence and education.
