BIG DATA
What is it? Why do we need it? What does it mean for ICT Professionals?
It has been estimated that approximately 2.5 Exabytes of data are created each day and that the internet now carries more data in a second than the entire internet held only a few years ago. Welcome to the world of Big Data.
This presentation will examine the origins of the emerging topic of “Big Data” and what it means for businesses, research institutions and Government. Its importance for the future will be discussed together with its implications for the use of Information Technology. Finally, the effect on ICT professionals and the ICT profession will be explored.
During the discussion, the presenter will provide examples from industry and government as well as drawing on his experience as Director of the Australian Government funded Research Data Storage Infrastructure (RDSI) which aims to provide a means of storing up to 100 Petabytes from research groups across all Australian Universities, CSIRO and some government departments.
