Live Music features at Teleteaching 96

VIRTUAL CONCERT

CANBERRA......to......KATMANDU
We are not here.... Send us your requests..... And we wreck them!
BILL NIELSON AND KID SISTER brought a refreshing touch to the conference proceedings with a live Internet performance!

‘Take your jackets and ties off, clap, dance and enjoy the music’ was the motto of a concert that was not only available to the conference participants but to all who were hooked to the information superhighway. The requests kept coming in either via the email or called out, the band played favourite tunes, people danced and the good time was had by all.

Today’s Highlights

README - FRIDAY MORNING EDITION OF DAILY EXPRESS WILL LIST ALL SIX WINNERS OF THE TOSHIBA LAPTOPS

THE FUTURE IS PHOTOPOINT

Olivetti's new PhotoPoint photo ID/ licensing system, is at the leading edge of ID, Passport and licence technology.

This Australian designed and developed system offers a wide range of card production options. The software provides the user with storage, design, database and management functions to operate the system.

The PhotoPoint system uses standard PVC cards, production takes twelve minutes, ten minutes to design and a minute and a half to print.

PhotoPoint offers a number of card options for security and convenience. Electronic signature, photograph, hologram and thumb prints are among the security options offered.

For convenience, Mag Stripes, Smart cards and RFID can be added which will enable the card to be used on vending machines and photocopiers, in a similar fashion to EFTPOS facilities.

The PhotoPoint system can be tailored to suit individual needs and Olivetti also provides installation, training, maintenance and support.

The NSW RTA have been among the first to adopt the PhotoPoint system, for the production of NSW driver licences. Two pilot sites are currently in operation and full operation will be underway by November.

To learn more about this innovative new system, check out the Olivetti display at the exhibition.

PROFESSOR TONY MONTGOMERY

On Learning in the Virtual Reality Environment

Professor Tony Montgomery, a professor of Computer Sciences at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology sees virtual reality as a particularly useful tool for keeping up to date with latest developments in dynamic fields such as computer sciences. Keeping up to date, as important as it is, constitutes only one aspect of effective teaching. Professor Montgomery believes that deciding which components of educational curricula are going to benefit by implementing modern technology, specifically tele-teaching, poses a dilemma. He hopes that through tele media, courses in computing sciences can be kept current. However, not every aspect of teaching can be successfully accomplished by tele teaching. ‘You need to ride a bike in order to learn how to do it’ says Professor Montgomery, the same applies to teaching.

The Exhibition Rolls On

The IFIP96 exhibition continued yesterday. Most exhibitors were kept busy by curious visitors and d elegates. The exhibition closes today.
