IT Innovators Wanted for SEARCC’98
Monday, 13 October 1997 - The Australian Computer Society (ACS) has issued the First Call for Papers for next year’s prestigious SEARCC’98 Conference, encouraging submissions from leading Australian consultants, practitioners and academics for the Region’s leading IT talkfest.
The annual conference and exhibition of the South East Asian Regional Computer Confederation (SEARCC), SEARCC’98 is being staged in Darwin from 8-10 July, the first time Australia has won the right to host the event.
With over 1,000 delegates expected to attend from across the Region, organisers are developing SEARCC’98 as a significant opportunity for Australian companies wanting to link up with Asian business partners.
In addition to the substantial support offered by the Federal and various State Governments around Australia, the Northern Territory Government is hosting a series of "business matching" sessions designed to connect foreign delegates with like-minded Australian organisations.
Invited guest speakers include Microsoft’s Bill Gates, Larry Ellison of Oracle, Charles Wang from Computer Associates and US Vice President Al Gore, while Prime Minister Howard has been invited to continue the tradition of having the host Head of State present the opening address.
ACS President-elect and Chair of the SEARCC’98 Organising Committee, Prins Ralston, said the Conference theme of "IT Reaching Out" will seek to showcase IT developments in three main areas:
· The On-Line Economy and Trading in Asia;
· Virtual Education and Training; and
· Frontiers in Aerospace and Defence.
"These Conference streams have been chosen both for their impact on our region today and their importance for the future," said Mr Ralston.
"Both the On-line Economy and Virtual Education and Training are expected to an accepted part of life in the 21st Century, while the third stream, Frontiers in Aerospace and Design, focuses on a specialist area where vision becomes reality through advancements in IT.
"In addition to the high profile, invited guests, the SEARCC’98 Conference will provide opportunities for refereed papers to be presented by Australian IT practitioners and researchers. We are keen to hear from people who are breaking new ground in any of the above areas," he said.
The Program Committee, chaired by Dr Alan Underwood of the Queensland University of Technology, is inviting papers, panel proposals and demonstrations pertaining to the three streams. Papers must be submitted electronically via the SEARCC web site by 30 November 1997.
