ACS Launches Global Internet Competition for SEARCC’98
Tuesday 31 March 1998 - The Australian Computer Society (ACS) is looking for creative and innovative web designers to take part in a worldwide Internet competition.
The inaugural SEARCC Internet Competition, being staged in conjunction with the SEARCC’98 Conference to be held in Darwin from 8-10 July 1998, is expected to attract thousands of entries from around the globe.
SEARCC’98 is the annual conference of the South East Asia Regional Computer Confederation (SEARCC), which represents over 300,000 IT professionals through 15 national computer societies throughout the region.
While the competition was originally conceived as a challenge for member professionals, ACS President, Prins Ralston, said they decided to open it up in recognition of the fact that the Internet is a global entity.
"The SEARCC Internet Competition provides a unique opportunity for both amateur and professional Web designers to pit their skills against their peers and colleagues from all over the world," said Mr Ralston, who is also Vice President of SEARCC.
Entrants to the competition are required to design and build a homepage for SEARCC meeting specified criteria, and also complete two sets of questions about the SEARCC Conference.
With prizes including a return airfare to Australia from anywhere in the world, first class accommodation in Darwin for five days and registration for SEARCC’98, the ACS is expecting between 5,000 and 20,000 entries.
The competition is open to anyone in the world, regardless of geographical location, age or computing skills.
Regional contests will be held in each of SEARCC’s 15 member countries plus a ‘rest of world’ category to produce a short list of finalists for the final judging panel, which will comprise Internet experts from Australia, Singapore and the US.
All homepage entries must be submitted by 7 May 1998 while the question and answer section must be completed during April.
The overall winner of the competition will receive an award during a special presentation at the SEARCC’98 Conference.
Full details of the competition and design criteria are available at the SEARCC'98 Web site.
