ACS Pledges Support for IT Initiatives
Thursday 26 September 1996 - The Australian Association of Professors of Computer Science has welcomed the Australian Computer Society's decision to provide financial support for its Annual Statistical Report.
The Report summarises resource inputs and outputs (both in terms of graduates and research accomplished by staff) in National Computer Science Departments.
"The data is used to assist planning across Australia towards improving focus and facilities for Computer Science programs," said Association Chairman, Professor John Rosenberg.
"ACS members will benefit from the Society's support for this activity by ensuring that Australian students graduate with knowledge, skills and attitudes that are world-competitive"
A recent meeting of the ACS Council also agreed to support the staging of the Australian Computer Science Conference, to be held in Sydney in February 1997.
The ACS funds will be used to fund one of the Conference highlights, a public lecture at Sydney's Powerhouse Museum on the Babbage Computing Engine by Professor Allan Bromley, a world authority on the subject.
Only six of these machines were ever made and one is now housed in the Powerhouse Museum. It, along with several other classic computing devices, will be on display at the lecture. In recognition of the sponsorship, ACS members will receive discounted registration to the Conference.
Director of the ACS Computer Science Board, Professor Tony Montgomery said these were but two of the many Australian IT development initiatives supported by the ACS, with seed funding also provided for attendance by Society members at International Technical and Standards Committees and Conferences.
"By actively contributing to these international activities, ACS members are assisted in being aware of new directions and new commercial opportunities which will benefit Australians."
