New On-Line IT Management Courses Leverage ACS Certification
Wednesday, 3 December 1997 - Material developed for the Australian Computer Society's (ACS) Certification Program provided the content for new post-graduate on-line education launched today.
The ACS provided its material and expertise to PAGE, a recognised provider of external Professional and Graduate Education in the fields of Health, Management and Education, to help develop new IT Management courses.
The Graduate Diploma and Masters in Information Technology Management courses were launched in Sydney today by the ACS, PAGE and the AIIA.
"Based on technical and management content used by the ACS in developing its Members to Certification level, these courses are extremely relevant for IT professionals wanting to enhance their skills and gain additional qualifications," said ACS President, Tom Worthington.
"The demanding nature of work in IT&T often prevents people from enrolling in traditional post-graduate courses because they cannot easily attend lectures at university or TAFE. However the move by PAGE to introduce flexible, on-line education for these busy professionals means they can study at the time and place convenient to them."
From 1998, PAGE will offer Graduate Diploma and Masters level courses aimed at two key targets: IT professionals wanting to move into management; and professionals migrating from other fields to management roles in IT.
"These courses set a new standard in the delivery of IT education in Australia," said Jon Heales, Director of the ACS Professional Development Board.
"These courses will allow IT professionals to enjoy all the benefits of university-based education without leaving their home or office. Lecture materials, workshops and tutorials are all handled on-line and students communicate with university staff and other students over the Internet.
"The rapid pace of change in the IT&T industry means continuing education is essential for IT professionals. However, traditional methods of post-graduate study are often inflexible, and completely at odds with the technology with which these professionals are dealing on a day to day basis.
"The courses offered by PAGE provide a far more realistic alternative and one which other universities must emulate if they are to be successful in attracting students for their post graduate IT education," he said.
ACS Certification Manager, Norman Lacy, said the Society was delighted to have the opportunity to work with PAGE.
"The ACS already accredits all IT-related tertiary education in Australia but this project, in allowing us to provide the actual content for broad-based post-graduate offerings, extends the impact of our expertise beyond the immediate membership of the ACS.
"PAGE clearly recognises and values the need to work together with professional bodies like ours to achieve the best possible result in developing and delivering its new courseware.
"We commend these courses to IT professionals seeking to enhance their technical and management expertise in the most flexible way possible," he said.
Courses will be delivered by Central Queensland University, Edith Cowan University, RMIT University and the ACS.
