ACS Calls for Industry Consultation on Government IT Outsourcing
Friday, 14 November 1997 - Canberra - The Australian Computer Society (ACS) has called on the Federal Government to consult with the IT industry on setting a new direction for IT outsourcing.
The call follows the release of a Senate Committee report into IT Outsourcing, industry criticism of the Government approach and resignation of the Government's Chief Information Officer.
"The Government's IT Outsourcing policy is now in a state of total disarray," said ACS President, Tom Worthington.
"It is time to consult with the industry and bring the process back on track. The ACS detailed our concerns over IT outsourcing in our submission to the Senate committee, and these are reflected in the report.
"Outsourcing is a valid policy option for government, but it needs to be done the right way. The Senate report is a good guide to the issues and I suggest the Government start by reading it. It would be unfortunate if the value of this report was lost due to party politics," he said.
Mr Worthington gave evidence to the Senate committee in September and will co-chair an IT Outsourcing conference in Canberra from 26-27 November 1997. See the ACS Senate Submission and the Senate report "Contracting Out of Government Services - First Report - Information Technology", Senate Finance and Public Administration References Committee, November 1997.
