ACS Welcomes New Funding for Australian Research Sector
Wednesday 22 December 1999 - The Australian Computer Society (ACS) has welcomed an announcement by the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp, of a new policy and funding framework for university research.
ACS President, Prins Ralston, said the Government is to be congratulated on its recognition that research is the powerhouse of innovation, and must be supported and encouraged for Australia to succeed in the global knowledge-based economy.
"The ACS has consistently called for greater funding for research, which will be an essential driver in the Information Age, particularly in the critical IT&T sector which offers so much potential for growth and prosperity for Australia," said Mr Ralston.
"In light of comments from some observers that these monies are being re-directed from existing programs within the education sector, I would like to state that I certainly hope that is not the case and that this is a genuine attempt to address the research capacity of Australian universities.
I would further suggest that the return of the 150 per cent research incentive as part of the business taxation package would have a very positive effect. This sector desperately needs a higher degree of recognition and support and I am hopeful these measures announced by Dr Kemp will go some way towards achieving that," he said.
