ACS Sets National E-Commerce Agenda at IO'98
Friday 16 October 1998 - The Australian Computer Society (ACS) will play a significant role in setting Australia's electronic commerce (e-commerce) policy agenda at a major national conference in Canberra next month.
The 1998 Information Industry Outlook Conference (IO'98), to be held at the Australian National University on 7 November 1998, will concentrate on electronic commerce and security issues.
Operating under the banner "IO'98 - Net Benefit for Australia?", the conference will be hosted by the Australian Computer Society - Canberra Branch, in Cooperation with the Department of Industry, Science and Tourism (DIST).
ACS President Prins Ralston, in Sydney to chair a meeting of the ACS National Council, announced the release of several of several major papers for IO'98 on the Internet:
"With the convergence of digital technologies, combining computers, telecommunications, publishing, TV and radio, the information industries are emerging to dominate the world economy," said Mr Ralston.
"This conference will address important issues of national significance such as: How has electronic commerce affected the Australian economy? What of the future? What steps should Australian companies and government take to position Australian for an information economy future? What newly emerging technologies will become important?"
Not only is the conference available for very low cost registration (advance registration only $50, ACS Member $20, Student Member $10), but it also features extensive use of the Internet.
Papers are being published on-line before the conference and delegates are being encouraged to read the papers in advance and submit comments and questions to the authors to help them in preparing their presentations.
Speakers have been instructed not to read their papers, but address issues involved and answer questions from an informed audience. A live link to the Internet will allow speakers to download the latest material in response to questions.
Conference details, including selected papers, are available online.
