ACS Applauds DCITA Restructure
Monday 2 November 1998 - The Australian Computer Society (ACS) has welcomed decisive moves by Senator Richard Alston to restructure the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts (DCITA).
ACS Chief Executive, Arthur Dyster, said the shake-up, announced just two weeks after IT was added to Senator Alston's portfolio, would help to focus the Department's existing and newly-acquired resources to the task at hand.
"We congratulate the Minister on bedding down very quickly the important area of IT within his expanded Department and taking steps to effectively incorporate both NOIE and OGIT, now called the Office for Government Online," he said.
"We also commend Senator Alston on bringing together some very relevant and influential people to create the Australian Information Economy Advisory Council, further demonstrating his willingness to consult widely and listen to the profession and the industry on matters of concern.
"It is encouraging to see that the new Department recognises the significance of Information Technology, not just as an industry in its own right, but also for its importance both to underpin other industries and to contribute enormously to Australia's economic strength and position within the region."
Mr Dyster said the ACS would seek early discussions with the Minister about opportunities to continue and build on the role it plays in assisting Government policy-making and implementation.
