ACS Welcomes Tax Relief for Y2K Work
Wednesday 13 May 1998 - The Australian Computer Society (ACS) congratulateds the Federal Government on moves to allow tax concessions for work relating to the Year 2000 problem.
The Society’s Year 2000 Coordinator, John Ridge, said the initiative, announced in last night’s Federal Budget, dramatically eases the substantial financial burden associated with gaining Y2K compliance.
"The Treasurer’s announcement of tax relief for Y2K work reinforces the message that Year 2000 compliance is not optional, but is a business hurdle that must be overcome. The Government has taken strong and direct measures to assist business in ensuring they are not disadvantaged in 2000," he said.
"Mr Costello is to be commended on his foresight in tackling this issue head on. Not only is he prepared to forego significant tax revenues in order to give business a chance to deal with the Y2K problem, but he is offering substantially greater concessions than Governments in the US and UK, with whom we compete.
"Australian business now has no excuse not to give Year 2000 work its full attention," said Mr Ridge.
