ACS Announces New Team to Build Australia's Knowledge Edge
Thursday 30 September 1999 - The Australian Computer Society (ACS) has named a new editorial team of senior IT&T professionals for its professional journal, the Australian Computer Journal (ACJ).
The Society's quarterly professional journal, ACJ publishes technical articles and new research, complementing the ACS' general interest magazine, Information Age.
ACS Publications Board Director, Tom Worthington, said professional publications like the ACJ are of increasing importance as Australia seeks to compete internationally in knowledge based industries.
"Australian academics and researchers will provide the raw material from which Australia's export industries of the next millennium will be forged. Our key thrust is to maintain a sound, rigorous academic journal, but make it more attractive to IT&T practitioners by clearly demonstrating the relevance of research to practice.
"The rapid expansion of the Internet, the web and e-commerce has shown how quickly ideas can go from an abstract academic idea to something central to the country's economy. The ACS will be revising the production process for ACJ to take advantage of the on-line revolution, to bring information to the Society's professional Members more quickly, while respecting the traditions of a professional journal of record," Mr Worthington said.
The new Editorial Board comprises five highly respected academics: John Roddick as the new Editor, supported by Associate Editors, Graham Low (Information Systems), Hugh E Williams (Computer Science), Denis Warne (Software Engineering) and Books Editor David Williams.
John Roddick, is Associate Professor, School of Computer and Information Science, at the University of South Australia and recently completed four years as the Head of School. An academic for the past 10 years, Mr Roddick previously spent 10 working in the IT&T industry as a programmer, analyst and project leader/manager.
"The health of the Australian Computer Journal is, in many ways, a direct reflection of the health of Australian IT education and research," said Mr Roddick.
"As Editor, I will endeavour to ensure that the ACJ reflects the strength we undoubtedly have in our universities and in computing industries. Moreover, the ACJ must be seen by the international community as a target for high quality articles, not just in the Asia Pacific Region but world-wide."
