ACS Honours Two Companies in Inaugural AAESPI Awards
Friday, 10 October 1997 - The Australian Computer Society (ACS) has joined forces with the Federal Department of Industry, Science and Tourism (DIST) to honour two companies in the inaugural Australian Award for Excellence in Software Process Improvement (AAESPI).
Jointly funded by the DIST and the ACS, this annual award recognises outstanding examples of achievement in quality and productivity and seeks to encourage organisations to take a more disciplined approach to the development of software within Australia.
The 1997 awards were announced at last week’s Australian Software Engineering Conference (ASWEC) 1997, with two organisations receiving Honourable Mention Awards.
These went to SCITEC Pty Ltd’s Software R&D team and to Ericsson Australia Pty Ltd’s Fixed Network PSTN/ISDN T/X Unit within the Systems Design and Engineering Division.
According to Dr Lin Zucconi, Chair of the ACS Software Process Improvement Technical Committee award review team, "Both groups demonstrated strong software process improvement efforts with very good planning and goal setting and some excellent results."
Founder of the Australian Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN), Dr Zucconi has been critical in the past of the lack of focus on process improvement in this country.
"Many Australian companies show a real lack of scientific methodology in their approach to software development so it’s very important to recognise those organisations which are making a concerted effort to improve their processes," she said.
In adjudicating the award, the review team looked for key factors such as sustainability, management support and commitment, and measurement data that relates improvements achieved to planned business-directed goals.
"We strongly encourage these two teams and all other Australian organisations developing or maintaining software to continue to advance their improvement efforts and to submit applications for the 1998 award," said Dr Zucconi.
The AAESPI award provides the opportunity for the winning team, its organisation, and its achievement to receive national recognition and promotes the development and use of software best practice within the Australian context.
The award is given based upon a measurable improvement to an organisation's software process. This improvement may involve management, support, development, or operational methods or procedures, and may include other activities in addition to software development or enhancement. To be considered for this award, the improvement in a software process must be significant, planned, sustained and measured.
