ACS "Bootcamp" to Help Young Members Kickstart Their Career
Monday 3 May 2004 - The ACS (Australian Computer Society)
is giving a boost to the employment prospects of final year university students and recent graduates by funding a three-day professional development program themed "From Graduation to Employment".
To be held in Sydney from 11-13 July 2004, the event will give delegates the opportunity to test-drive the interview process, learn how to tap into the hidden job market, network with graduates, and gain an insight into the skills needed for success in the workforce.
ACS President Edward Mandla said this is an excellent opportunity for young people entering a tight workforce.
"The annual ACS ICT Employment Survey, released in February, reminded us that while unemployment in the sector is falling, the overall rate remains high when compared to the national unemployment figure, particularly for those under age 25.
"The ACS understands that for young IT professionals, making the transition from study to employment can be challenging at the best of times, but is even more so when jobs are scarce," Mr Mandla said.
The exceptional line-up of speakers will provide an insight into the short and longer-term trends in the industry. It will discuss emerging technologies, match jobs and personality types and help delegates to workshop a career plan. The event will also include workforce issues that aren't covered at university, such as organisational culture and how to manage your workload.
Three talented young IT professionals will also share their stories of success, warts and all.
In addition, a whole day is dedicated to the job application and interview process, and will include workshopping and role plays.
"The program is entirely interactive and delegates will leave with an understanding of where the industry is heading and how they can best leverage their skills, experiences and personality type within that framework.
"They'll also have tangible outcomes, having created a winning resume and career plan, and have the skills and confidence to conduct a killer interview," Mr Mandla said.
ACS is offering its young members a subsidised rate of $200, which includes airfares, accommodation, meals and registration ($150 for Sydney residents who do not require airfares and accommodation).
Numbers are limited, so candidates are required to complete an application form that will be assessed by a panel. For further information or to complete an application, visit www.acs.org.au/bootcamp/4004/index.htm or contact Seni Murni at the ACS on 1800 626 029.
