Digital Economy
- Google has won a long-standing court case brought by the ACCC over misleading advertising. After a six-year court battle, the high court concluded that the tech giant did not engage in misleading or deceptive conduct by allowing companies to pay to appear in searches for their competitors.
- One of the largest computer makers has gone private as Dell Computers announce a US$24.4 billion deal involving private equity and investment from founder Michael Dell and Microsoft. The struggling company hopes to turn around its business within the next 3 to 5 years.
Cyber Security
- A secret legal review has found that US president Barack Obama can order pre-emptive cyber strikes if a major digital attack against the US is imminent. The new policy also governs how US agencies can carry out searches of overseas networks for signs of attacks.
- Microsoft and Symantec have helped to disrupt a global cyber crime ring by shutting down servers that controlled hundreds of thousands of PCs that were being controlled without their owners knowledge. It is estimated that 300,000-600,000 PCs were infected with the software.
Cloud
- Telstra has announced significant profit growth in its enterprise division following its billion dollar investment in cloud. It’s Network Application Service reported revenue up 10.6% to $636 mil in H2 2012.
- A global study of senior executives’ executives with cloud computing has found that most businesses have move past seeing the cloud as simply a cost reduction strategy. The KPMG report also found that one third reported integrating cloud with existing infrastructure resulted in higher implementation costs than expected.
Telecommunications
- The NBN Co will need to rapidly scale up its rollouts to meet the target it set for last year, according to Chief Executive Mike Quigley. Just 72,400 premises by the end of December 2012. The target is to pass 341,000 by June this year.
- Telstra has surpassed 1.5 million 4G customers, according to its half year report. The company also added over 600,000 mobile customers, bringing its total mobile customer base to 14.4 million.

The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, the Member for Richmond, Justine Elliot, and the Member for Page, Janelle Saffin, today welcomed the announcement that planning has started to connect local communities in the Northern Rivers region to the National Broadband Network.
