Senator The Hon. Stephen Conroy officially launches National ICT Careers Week

Tuesday 22 May 2012: Senator the Hon. Stephen Conroy, Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy officially launched National ICT Careers Week today at the Australian Computer Society (ACS) stand at the CeBIT annual conference.

National ICT Careers Week – under the theme ICT: Start Here, Go Anywhere – will be held from 23 to 29 July 2012.

Penny Coulter, Chair of the Careers Week Steering Committee said, “The Week aims to excite young people, their parents and teachers about what Information and Communications Technology (ICT) study has to offer. It will also highlight the diverse and rewarding range of ICT careers available, across Australia and the world, in almost every industry.”

During the official opening at CeBIT today, Senator the Hon. Stephen Conroy said, “I am pleased to officially launch National ICT Careers Week. Investing in ICT’s future leaders is crucial to the prosperity of our nation through the development of the emerging digital economy. By collaborating with industry heads and corporations, young ICT students and professionals can gain the best insight and knowledge of the industry.”

The Australian Computer Society’s Chief Executive Officer Alan Patterson agreed saying, “National ICT Careers Week aims to ensure that Australia continues to produce a highly-skilled workforce with the capacity to sustain and grow the $100bn digital economy with local expertise and innovation.

“ICT is one of the fastest growing industries in Australia and ICT professionals are in demand across all sectors of the economy. Forecasts suggest an additional 35,000 ICT jobs will be in demand by the end of 2013. ICT Careers Week is a great platform for all levels of government and industry to work together to change current community perceptions surrounding the ICT profession,” Mr Patterson said.

“The ACS Foundation promotes careers in ICT to secondary school students, and sends career information to the students and their influencers. It also assists university students with their transition from their studies into the industry, with valuable relevant industry experience,” said John Ridge AM, Executive Director of the ACS Foundation.
