National ICT Careers Week supported by the Victorian Minister for Higher Education & Skills

The Hon. Peter Hall, the Victorian Minister for Higher Education and Skills is supporting the National ICT Careers Week.

Recently he advised, “The National ICT Careers Week provides young people with information on education and training options that will help them participate productively in technology-driven global economies.”

Ms Penny Coulter, Chair of the National ICT Career Week initiative said:

“We are very pleased with the Victorian Government continuing its strong support for National ICT Careers Week. Victorian Governments have been engaged in the Careers Week from its inception and they have provided strong support for the many Victorian organisations that have participated, and are participating in the National ICT Careers Week.”

“The annual National ICT Careers Week is running from 23-29 July 2012,”  advised Ms Coulter. “Organisations across Australia are seeking to  introduce young people to the rewarding and engaging career  opportunities available across Australia and in the world.”

Ms Coulter said, “There are excellent events and activities being presented in Victoria. These are listed on the National ICT Careers Week website.”

The RMIT Work Experience Fair, being presented by the ACS Foundation and IT Masters, will give opportunities for employers to recruit talented current students for internships, work placements, cooperative positions and vacation work programs.

The Ballarat Get into Games Expo is be run by Ballarat ICT for the Ballarat Region with the support of City of Ballarat, the Victorian Information on National ICT Careers Week activities, participating organisations and other information

The 2012 Melton ICT Careers Expo is being conducted by the Victoria University at its Melton Campus and will showcase ICT careers for over 100 Melton secondary school students.

Swinburne University is running a number of events associated with National ICT Careers Week. Swinburne’s Faculty of ICT has implemented strategies over the past four years aimed at raising aspirations and
interest in ICT. The key strategy has been an innovative and comprehensive ICT Secondary School Support Program. Professor Christopher Pilgrim, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technologies at Swinburne University, says “Swinburne has achieved remarkable growth in VTAC enrolments in ICT degrees through a strategy of direct engagement with schools. This growth has been achieved without dropping entry standards or compromising our excellent employment outcomes”. This program directly engages schools
and secondary students in order to raise awareness and create interest in ICT careers and courses. 2012 VCE IT Applications Day Workshop has been designed by Swinburne's Faculty of ICT to enrich students' understanding of the IT Applications curriculum. Also, its 2012 VCE Software Development Day is a hands-on workshop for VCE Software Development students and is based on the subject's curriculum.

2012 Upload Your Future -Girls in IT is hosted by Swinburne University & will include interactive programming and design workshops, inspirational female industry speakers, and an opportunity to hear from current female ICT students. This program is open to students from years 7 to 10.

Deloitte Tech Challenge 2012 has Deloitte’s Technology teams including Deloitte Analytics, Technology Consulting and Risk Services to help ICT students learn more about Deloitte’s Technology service lines and the opportunities it has for summer vacation students and graduates. This is an evening event with refreshments provided.

Alan Patterson, Chief Executive Officer, Australian Computer Society welcomed the strong support by the Victorian Government and the many Victorian organisations that have participated in, and are participating in this year’s National ICT Careers Week. He said, “ICT opens a world of possibilities and offers work across a range of exciting industries. Current and future generations of Australian ICT professionals will be engaged in solving many of the most of the significant problems we face today.”

Ms Coulter emphasised,“Young people, their parents, their teachers and their careers advisors can find out about the Victorian National ICT events by going to the National ICT Careers Week website www.ictcareersweek.info.”

About National ICT Careers Week

The annual National ICT Careers Week will be running across the country from 23-29 July 2012, with events and activities being presented by businesses, educational institutions, government agencies, industry bodies, women’s groups and professional bodies.

National ICT Careers Week showcases the opportunities in information and communications technology available to young people. We want to introduce young people to the rewarding and engaging career opportunities available across Australia and in the world.

The Australian Computer Society (ACS), ACS Foundation (ACSF), the Australian Council of Deans of Information and Communications Technology (ACDICT), the TAFE Directors’ Association (TDA), Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO) and the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) coordinate the National ICT
Careers Week.

Organisations, together with their events and activities, are listed on the National ICT Careers Week website. The website is being constantly updated with new registrants and National ICT Careers Week activities.

While the National Career Week is set for 23–29 July 2012, the Week can be used to advertise or market events promoting ICT study and careers that will be held later in the year.
