Warning: Scam Calls about Problems with Your Computer

The Australian Computer Society (ACS) has recently received a number of reports about scammers claiming to be from the ACS.

The ACS wishes to alert individuals and organisations about scam calls claiming that their computers are infected with a virus or are sending out error messages. Scammers, falsely claiming to be representing the ACS, are making calls to people and offering to repair their computer for a fee. They request remote access to the computer to run a “scan” that shows up fake viruses and pressures the individual into buying software to “fix” the computer.

Please be advised that the ACS does not make calls concerning computer performance.

Should you receive this kind of scam call, just HANG UP.

You can report a scam to the ACCC via the report a scam page on SCAMwatch or by calling 1300 795 995.
