Call for Nominations - NSW BEC 2012-2013

Notice to all ACS New South Wales Branch Members 

Nominations are hereby called for the following positions on the 2012-2013 ACS New South Wales Branch Executive Committee. Appointments commence 1 January 2012. This year the Branch Executive Committee has decided to ensure continuity and effectiveness of BEC by stipulating that the terms for the all positions be for a set term of either 1 or 2 years as specified for each position.

Office Bearers:

  • Branch Chairperson (two year term)
  • Branch Vice Chairperson (two year term)
  • Branch Vice Chairperson (one year term)
  • Branch Honorary Secretary (two year term)
  • Branch Honorary Treasurer (one year term)

 Ordinary Committee:

Ordinary Committee Members -5 positions (one year term)

Ordinary Committee Members - 5 positions (two year term)

Eligibility:

All financial members of the ACS New South Wales Branch are eligible for nomination. Office Bearers are drawn from members of the Professional Division (Members, Senior Members and Fellows together form the Professional Division of the ACS). At least one half of the Ordinary Committee Members of the Branch Executive Committee must be members of the Professional Division.

For a nomination to be valid it must show the name and membership number and membership grade of the eligible candidate, be signed by the candidate as evidence of willingness to accept nomination and be signed by another member of any grade, of the Branch as proposer.

2011 BEC members retire on 31 December, 2011 and are eligible for re-election.

Closing Date for Nominations:

Nominations must be on the approved BEC 2012-2013 Nomination Form and reach the Returning Officer no later than 5:00pm, Wednesday 28th September, 2011. They may be posted or delivered to ACS NSW Branch, Level 11, 50 Carrington Street, Sydney NSW 2000. They may also be scanned and emailed to the New South Wales Branch Returning Officer at: acsnsw@acs.org.au. The onus rests with those concerned to ensure that nominations are lodged by the closing date.

Election:

If there are more nominations than positions, a ballot will be held to determine the successful nominees. 

To assist members in making their selection, nominees will be asked to supply a statement of no more than 200 words in support of their nomination. This should be sent to the New South Wales Returning Officer at: acsnsw@acs.org.au or delivered with the forms as below.

New South Wales Branch BEC: Key Roles and responsibilities

The aim of this brief is to inform potential BEC nominees of the ACS New South Wales Branch’s key objectives and the typical skills required to be an effective BEC Member. Any financial member of the ACS New South Wales Branch is eligible to nominate to be a BEC member (refer to the ACS National Regulations). Nominees should be aware of some of the skills required to perform the role of a BEC Member.

Note that all BEC positions are voluntary and require varying amounts of time to fulfil the governance duties detailed below. Office Bearer positions can typically require up to approximately 15 hours per month, the Chairperson’s role requiring upwards of 20 hours, whilst Ordinary Board Member positions are typically required to attend one evening meeting per month are expected to participate on sub-committees and attend the meetings as appropriate.

Being on the BEC has its compensations which include:

  • the satisfaction achieved by making a difference to the profession,
  • the friendships that develop between similarly motivated professionals
  • a wide exposure to the leading edge of ICT in New South Wales.

As in most things, what you get out of it is directly proportional to what you put in.

KEY OBJECTIVES

The Key Objectives of the BEC and its members are to:

  • Relevance to members and stakeholders
  • Seek and confirm ACS member needs with strong and frequent communication
  • Contribute to the Branch’s annual Business Plan of activities through workshops, active participation and communication
  • Provide feedback to ACS National Office about matters affecting the Branch

 Professional practice in ICT

  • Include professional practice objectives in the annual Business Plan
  • Contribute to and support the ACS Professional Development Program
  • Support and promote ACS Special Interest Groups
  • Support the ACS Professional Partner Program
  • Promote the importance of discipline, ethics and conduct for the profession

 Growth to ensure a sustainable future for the Society

  • Plan Branch activities and services in a manner that supports the objectives and interests of the ACS and Branch members

 Leadership and global positioning

  • Contribute to and support setting and achieving Branch KPIs
  • Keep up to date with ACS National Office initiatives to improve the professional standing of ACS
  • Support and contribute to the mentoring program

 Ensuring the Society is fit for the future

  • Participate as a member of appropriate Branch Committees
  • Participate as a member of appropriate Branch Sub-Committees
  • Behave responsibly in members’ interests in financial decisions

 People and culture

  • Ensure that the Branch Business Plan and activities are actively promoted to the Branch Manager and Staff
  • Actively communicate with staff and volunteers and encourage positive communications to all stakeholders
  • Ensure that the ACS’s values are demonstrated and encouraged at all times
  • Encourage adherence to the ACS Code of Ethics
  • Present and promote ACS to secondary and tertiary students and others as the opportunity arises

GENERAL SKILLS

Participation in the BEC will enable members to further develop and enhance their skills in the following areas:

  • Leadership and management expertise
  • Domain knowledge: technology breadth, rather than detailed technical knowledge
  • Strategy and planning
  • Understanding of the link between business and IT strategy
  • Communicate with confidence and possess the ability to address a medium to large audience
  • Thought leadership, especially in the digital economy
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Mentoring: ability to attract and develop people, especially young people
  • Managing diversity e.g. Young IT Professionals, Women in IT
  • Sound diplomatic skills

Outlined below are the duties of the Office Bearers and Ordinary Branch Executive members. These are not intended to be prescriptive, but rather to give potential nominees a better understanding of the roles for which they are nominating. Included also are the various portfolio positions.

 

Office Bearers – Duties

Branch Chair

  • Provide leadership to the BEC and staff of the Branch
  • Inspire members to engage with the ACS at the Branch level
  • Is a NSW Branch Congressional Rep
  • Outwardly focussed to promote ACS relevance to ICT practitioners
  • Undertake the duties of an ordinary committee member of the BEC

Vice Chair – Branch Matters

  • Deputy to the Chair in Branch Matters
  • Act for the Chair in their absence
  • Oversight and facilitate members of the BEC in carrying out their local functions
  • Outwardly focussed to promote ACS relevance to ICT practitioners
  • Undertake the duties of an ordinary committee member of the BEC

Vice Chair – National Matters

  • Deputy to the Chair in National Matters
  • Act for the Chair in his/her absence
  • Is a NSW Branch Congressional Rep
  • Oversight members of the BEC in carrying out their national functions
  • Facilitate BEC members carrying out their roles
  • Outwardly focussed to promote ACS relevance to ICT practitioners
  • Undertake the duties of an ordinary committee member of the BEC

Honorary Treasurer

  • Coordinate the development of a Branch budget for consideration by the BEC
  • Report to the BEC on expenditure and income against budget, and where necessary propose remedial actions.
  • Comment to the BEC on the financial aspects of any (new)initiative
  • Ensure that Branch funds are invested to maximise returns consistent with minimising risk exposures
  • Assist the BEC to carry out its responsibilities with respect to managing and controlling its funds (ACS Rules and National Regulations)
  • Provide advice and information about national accounts to the BEC to assist in them carrying out their respective roles
  • Undertake the duties of an ordinary committee member of the BEC

Honorary Secretary

  • Facilitate and assist BEC members to carry out their responsibilities with respect to ACS Rules, National Regulations and Standing Orders
  • Ensure that Decisions of Continuing Relevance (DCRs) are updated and the incoming BEC is aware of its responsibilities
  • Responsible for ensuring that accurate minutes of BEC and Branch General meetings are maintained
  • Ensure that appropriate procedures, guidelines and protocols are developed and maintained for all aspects of the work of the Branch
  • Undertake the duties of an ordinary committee member of the BEC

Immediate Past Chair

  • “Guide on the Side”, provide continuity and wisdom to incoming BEC
  • Other duties as agreed with incoming Chair

Ordinary Committee Member - Duties

Ordinary Committee Member

  • Assist office bearers with the governance and management of the Branch
  • Assist portfolio holders with their portfolios
  • Attend as many of the events as possible each month to demonstrate your commitment your professionalism and to the NSW Branch and its activities
  • Identify opportunities for the ACS to spread its professionalism and ethical behaviour in your communities of practice
  • Identify innovative opportunities for ACS, the NSW Branch and members
  • May initiate new SIGS or practices for ACS members
  • May be given responsibility for a particular project or
    initiative

Current Portfolios

 

Professional Development Committee Chair

 

  • Chairs a group of ACS members and others from industry in developing a program of activities to meet the needs of members' continuing professionaldevelopment
  • May be the NSW representative on the National PD Board which meets at least once each year face to face
  • Is 'customer focussed' and can identify target groups from amongst the NSW membership and can help shape PD offerings against the SFIA framework

Membership Lifecycle Committee Chair

 

  • Chairs a group of ACS members in developing a program of activities which engages with members and provision of services to members in order to retain them in ACS.
  • Provides advice and information about membership local and national issues to the BEC to assist in them carrying out their respective roles
  • Is the NSW representative on the National MLC Board which meets at least once each year face to face

Branch Fellows Committee Chair

 

  • Must be a Fellow
  • Chairs the committee that reviews and promotes the nominations in accordance with the Guidelines for HM and the Guidelines for Fellows
  • Identify potential nominees for Fellow and/or HM each year

Young IT Committee Chair

 

  • Chairs a group of ACS members and others from industry in developing a program of activities which engages with younger members in order to retain them in ACS and involve them in ACS volunteer action.
  • Provides advice and information about YIT local and national issues to the BEC portfolios and the BEC in general
  • Will usually be the NSW representative on the National YIT Board which meets at least once each year face to face and as such will have responsibility also to the YIT Board Director for programs of activity

ACS Women Committee Chair

 

  • Chairs a group of ACS members and others from industry in developing a program of activities which engages with women in ICT in order to both attract and retain female ICT practitioners to membership of the Society.
  • Provides advice and information about women in ICT local and national issues to the BEC portfolios and the BEC in general
  • Will usually be the NSW representative on the National ACS-W Board which meets at least once each year face to face and as such will have responsibility also to the ACS-W Board Director for programs of activity

Industry Leaders Committee Chair

 

  • Chairs a group of ACS members in developing a program of activities to promote the ACS and the relevancy of ACS membership to senior employers within the ICT industry including CIOs, Senior ICT managers, industry leaders and industry groups.
  • Provide strategy, measures and governance on the execution of events.

Special Interest Groups

 

  • Is the Branch SIGS Coordinator responsible for ensuring Branch SIGS are operating within approved guidelines and their activities conform to the BEC approved purpose for such groups
  • Outwardly focussed to promote ACS relevance to ICT practitioners
  • Undertake the duties of an ordinary committee member of the BEC
