ACS Canberra ICT Awards 2011
19 September 2011: The Australian Computer Society (ACS) recently hosted the third annual Canberra ICT Awards, an event recognising the outstanding performance and contribution of members within the ICT community in the ACT region.
The awards evening, which took place at the Boat House restaurant on Lake Burleigh Griffin, played host to corporate and government representatives from security and global online payment systems through to Canberra business Eway.
Michael Hawkins, ACS Canberra Branch Chair said, “As a community it is important we recognise the work and contribution of professionals who perform to exceptional levels.”
“The ACS is proud to acknowledge the winners and nominees of the 2011 Canberra ICT Awards. As the peak industry body, we are honoured to recognise the successes of ICT practitioners who demonstrate high levels of professionalism and innovative thinking.”
The ACS acknowledged Senator Kate Lundy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, with an Honorary Membership for her support of the ICT profession at a Federal Government level since entering politics in 1996. Senator Lundy noted that the ACS was influential in inspiring her to enter politics. She referenced a computing book from 1996 as one of her early industry bibles.
Dr Mike Bowern, a long standing ACS member, was awarded with an Honorary Membership for his over 30 year’s service to the ICT profession. Dr Bowern was recognised for his role in establishing ACS Canberra; his ongoing work with Australia National University (ANU); and his involvement with the ACS on ICT ethics and related areas.
“We would further like to congratulate Senator Lundy and Dr Bowern for their dedication and significant contributions to the Australian ICT sector. Both individuals are a credit to the ICT community,” said Mr Hawkins.
Winners from this year’s Canberra ICT Awards are automatically included as nominees in the 2012 National iAwards. The iAwards program is a joint initiative by ACS Canberra, the AIIA and the Pearcey Foundation, which recognises the achievements of ICT professionals.
The ACS would also like to give special thanks to the evening’s sponsors: The University of New South Wales Canberra Campus (ADFA), the ACT Government and PeopleBank.
