Green IT

Mission

Green IT is dedicated to bringing about awareness, knowledge and adoption of environmentally sustainable practices, policies and technologies in and through the IT industry. Supported by ACS, The SIG’s activities are also endorsed by the Australian Information Industries Association (AIIA) and the Australasian Association for Information Systems (AAIS).

Objectives

The NSW Green ICT SIG has state-specific objectives and contributes to the national agenda through the Green IT Taskforce. Within the scope of ‘awareness, knowledge and adoption of Green ICT’, Green IT, also known as SustainIT, covers areas such as:

  • Building a general awareness of the relationship between economic, social and environmental responsibilities
  • Increasing awareness of how IT contributes to and impacts the environment
  • Providing thought leadership on new directions for Green ICT
  • Helping businesses develop an action plan to audit their IT environments
  • Helping businesses to understand and reduce their environmental impact
  • Understanding and publicising likely business impacts of ignoring the issues
  • Demonstrating how IT can be leveraged to contribute to environmental sustainability
  • Understanding and advising government legislation and decision-making
  • Conducting our own activities in an environmentally responsible manner

The key NSW objective is to align these major goals to the state of New South Wales and the intricacies (e.g. legislation, businesses, standards, training, research) within this state.

Expected Outcomes

We differ slightly from other ACS SIGs as we aim to contribute to the wider national Green IT agenda through:

  • Development of specific content i.e. best practices, standards and policies, case studies and green papers
  • Contributing to NSW and national research on Green IT
  • Lobbying government and collaborating with industry
  • Empowering Green IT champions
  • Helping the industry develop innovation showcases on Green IT
  • Conducting and contributing to NSW workshops, seminars and forums.

This will be achieved through a structure of volunteers based in NSW who will own the development and implementation of the Green IT objectives, and will be lead by a State Convener. Our overall outcomes will contribute to the national agenda and we aim to collaborate with the other ACS Green IT SIGs in each state to achieve this.

Please contact us if you wish to contribute or lead a team within this very important area.
