BUSINESS SYSTEMS ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN
Journey, Outcomes, and Lessons of EA at Eskom

Eskom, as a state-owned utility enterprise, generates approximately 95% of the electricity used in South Africa and approximately 45% of the electricity used in Africa. Eskom generates, transmits and distributes electricity to industrial, mining, commercial, agricultural and residential customers and redistributors.

The Distribution division was always in the forefront of using the Enterprise Architecture concepts, starting by modelling their business processes and data models around 1990. In 2003 it was decided that the modelling of the division’s applications and infrastructure should follow. There was also a need to show how the applications support the business processes.

The presentation shows the journey of, results for and lessons learned from the modelling the ‘AS-IS’ EA Application, Data, Infrastructure and Integration Message domains, from its conception in May 2003 to June 2009. It also shows how all these domains provide input to the EA Solution Architecture domain, and why a decision was made to structure and name the Eskom EA meta-model in this particular manner.
