In recent years the Australian Computer Society has strongly advocated that declining student enrolments in both Higher Education and in Vocational Education and Training threatens to:
- Exacerbate current ICT skill shortages.
- Inhibit Australia’s future ability to be internationally competitive.
- Inhibit Australia’s ability to take full advantage of the opportunities being afforded by the digital age.
The ACS is committed to identifying and supporting the next generation of ICT leaders in the completion of their studies and in building their professional skills and networks. This is not just initially, rather throughout a rewarding ICT career.
Partnership opportunities exist for education institutions which are focussed on attracting students into the ICT industry. Whether you are a University, TAFE Institute, Private Registered Training Organisation, or High School, if you have a focus on ICT, contact ACS to discuss membership packages that can enhance the learning experience for your students, or access to professional development opportunities for your educators.
The ACS runs several programs to help ICT students, graduates and professionals upgrade their knowledge and skills.
Professional Year Program
This is a program for former international students who have graduated from a university within Australia and are seeking permanent residency. It is a job-readiness program with an inbuilt internship intended to equip graduates with the professional skills needed for a successful career in the Australian workforce.
Here you can study a range of ICT subjects online, and connect with peers both across Australia and internationally. ACS distance education programs are intensive 13-week programs delivered in a virtual college environment. Subjects available include:
o Business, Strategy and IT
o New Technology Alignment
o Enterprise Architecture
o Information Security
o IT Service Management
o Business Analysis
o Business Process Improvement (using Lean Six Sigma)
o Organisational Change management
Virtual College units have been used previously to articulate to a Masters degree at various articulation partner institutions. If you are intending to articulate to a Masters course using Virtual College units, please ensure you check with the institution where you are planning to study. This will ensure that you undertake the correct Virtual College units for successful articulation into the course of your choice.
Completion of the CPE Program (four Virtual College units, 3 core units from the following - Risk Management: Professionalism and Compliance; Business, Strategy and IT; and New Technology Alignment, plus one elective unit) will reduce the experience requirement of CP certification by 1.5 years.
ACS members, who reside overseas and can therefore not attend events, can gain access to resources for their CPD online.
Student members can also access more than 50 online courses to aid their professional development. Subjects include:
o Leadership essentials
o Managing your career
o Campus to Corporate
o Doing Business Professionally
o Professional Networking Essentials
Education Across the Nation (EdXN) is recognised as a significant part of the ACS speaker series. Held quarterly, EdXN presents topical speakers and content about the ICT sector today and in the future. EdXN is a highly valued event attracting ICT professionals from a broad range of industries. Our most recent EdXN offering was a Big Data series presented by Dr Nick Tate.
Through these and other programs, the ACS demonstrates its commitment to the education of its members and an increase in the knowledge base of those practising within the ICT profession.
