Is the Internet creating a social divide?

NQ ACS and Townsville Chamber of Commerce had a debate on this topic in Sept 2009.

NQ ACS was the negative team and won the debate.

Main arguments for the negative team were:

  • The Internet is available to those who desire it
  • Using the Internet does not discriminate
  • Non-Internet users are not disadvantaged
  • the Internet is helping to eliminate social divides

Team Summary

  • Internet Access can be free
  • Education in computing and the Internet can be free
  • The Internet can be used for cheap or free worldwide communication
  • The cost of computing hardware is falling
  • There are distribution methods available to get computing and Internet to non developed countries.
  • Once on the Internet more social divides are broken as users are treated as equals across the planet.
  • Information and ideas can be shared in real time to a possible audience of 1.6 billion people.
