Australasian Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence
Part of the impetus for the AI'XX series of annual conferences came from a number of successful conferences which had been held in the early 1980s. In Melbourne, Monash University hosted a 1984 conference on logic and computation, and the Australian AI Congress was held in Melbourne in 1986. The Sydney Expert Systems Group presented an annual conference on Applications of Expert Systems in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989. The latter conferences were all held at the University of Technology, Sydney.
Resulting from these, and from Commonwealth funding interest in the area, the National Committee for Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems was formed under the auspices of the Australian Computer Society, and inaugurated the AI'XX series in 1987.
