Can Project Management Work in the Public Sector?

Mr Rob Thomsett, Project Management Guru

4:15 pm to 5:00 pm

Rob Thomsett is arguably the most accomplished IT presenter in Australia, if not the world. His enthusiasm for project management (which can be a dry subject) is infectious and leaves audiences feeling energised and positive.

Rob began his IT career in 1967, as a base-grade clerk with the Australian Bureau of Statistics. He later moved to the Public Service Board, where an massive project was underway to improve the quality of IT systems across all government agencies.

Eventually, the project was axed, but Rob wrote up all the knowledge he had acquired through his five years there. His boss was not interested, so Rob turned his notes into a manuscript and his first book "People and Project Management", published in 1980, was the result. This led to consulting jobs with major US corporations like AT&T and the Wells Fargo Bank.

Rob has now been presenting project management courses in Australia, North America, Asia and Europe for over 23 years and has written two more books "Third Wave Project Management" and "People and Project Management". Combining the charisma of the on-stage performer with the in-depth knowledge of the subject-matter expert, Rob Thomsett is an unforgettable presenter.

In discussing this topic, Rob will validate the fact that project management in the public sector can be particularly challenging, with political constraints and enormous pressures to involve stakeholders. He will also explain how the application of eXtreme Project Management (XPM) techniques can lead to greater success, based on three fundamental principles: project management is a creative process, project management is about relationship management, and project management is a participative process.
