Mr Jonathan Palmer, CIO Australian Bureau of Statistics

 

Biography:

Jonathan Palmer is CIO for the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) where he leads a group of over 400 IT professionals responsible for the development and support of a sophisticated IT environment serving more than 3000 staff across Australia as well thousands of regular users of ABS products and services.

The ABS enjoys an international reputation as an organisation that uses IT well. The working environment Jonathan and his colleagues have created is regarded as an exemplar model in many fields including knowledge management, electronic publishing, data management and data warehousing.

A graduate of the University of Canberra, Jonathan's career has been largely devoted to the ABS and the application of information technology in the field of official statistics. For many years Jonathan has helped shape ABS strategy and direction and he lead the development of the current ABS Corporate Plan.

Jonathan currently serves as the Australian representative on the Governing Board of the Statistical Institute for Asia Pacific, he is a member of the Federal Government CIO Committee, convenor of the CIO Working Group on Information Interoperability and a frequently invited speaker at IT conferences. Jonathan is also an Adjunct Professor- Enterprise Architecture, Information Management, Strategic Planning at University of Canberra.

In recent months much of Jonathan's time has been devoted to the early stages of development of a "National Data Network" - an ambitious plan to network major custodians of statistical and administrative data holdings to improve the access, use, and quality of data relevant to research and policy development.
